The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

Goodreads summary for The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan
The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan is the first book in the Kane Chronicles.  I initially picked up this book because I loved, loved, loved the Percy Jackson series, also by Rick Riordan.  I was worried that I wouldn’t like this one as much, because I’m way more familiar with Greek mythology than I am Egyptian mythology.  I needn’t have worried though, either it was just that my knowledge of Egyptian mythology was adequate, or Riordan does such a good exploring those characters that I never felt lost within the story.

If there is anything that I didn’t like as much about this book, it’s the narration.  It goes back and forth between Carter and Sadie Kane.  And while I liked both of them very much, I sometimes felt disjointed between the two, sometimes forgetting which one I was reading.  Or maybe it’s just that neither were quite as enduring as Percy Jackson was.  At least, neither character was as funny as Percy was.  His inner dialogue was often hysterical.

Having said that, I really did like this book very much.  There is something very inviting about a coming of age, finding out you’re super powerful and magical, story that I just love.  And this one did not disappoint.  As I said, I did like both Sadie and Carter very much.  I really enjoyed their sibling dynamic and how they grew closer throughout the story.  One of the benefits of having the story told alternating from their points of view is that we got to experience great moments with both of them.  They each had *the moment* when they started to realizing that life was more than they thought, and then another moment when they started to realize how amazing they each are.  And they started seeing that in each other, which was really sweet.

And we meet some other great characters along the way.  My favorites were the goddess Bast and, of course, Khufu the baboon.
