I didn't want to write this post. I didn't want to get involved in this Chick-Fil-A induced argument. Mostly because I think it's made-up and overdramatized. But it was hurting my heart and I had to get it out.
First of all, we shouldn't even be eating fast food. IT'S NOT GOOD FOR YOU. We should not even be spending enough money at fast food restaurants to make any bit of difference in the first place -- controversy or not.
Second of all, SO MANY businesses participate in practices with which I don't agree. I cannot possibly boycott all of them. Most sell us products made in China by underage and and underpaid workers. NO - I don't have a source for that information. Please prove me and my sweeping generalizations wrong.
Third, God is LOVE. Because I believe in a triune God, that means Jesus is love. Which means part of my duty as a Christian is to reflect that love with my choices and actions.
Last, but not least: where I live, it was illegal to marry someone of a different race until 1967. This was only seven years before I was born. Now, because technically "hispanic" is an ethnicity and not a race, I can't say this with complete certainty, but if that law hadn't changed? It would have been illegal for my husband and I to marry each other.
I did not participate in today's "appreciation" event. In fact, the event itself made me sick to my stomach. I saw no love in that event. I only saw sadness and ignorance and the abuse of innocent people who mistakenly believed they were involved in something good when they were really just part of a marketing ploy.
Friends: Don't let them get you.
Don't let them tell you what to think. Don't let them make you believe they are the victims. Don't let them tell you what the Bible says. READ IT AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELVES.
After I had already written everything above, I went to my iPhone for a bible verse (so high tech, right?). The "verse of the day" that came up on my Bible app was:
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 NIV
So, I decided to read the rest of the chapter and came across this at the very end:
We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. 1 John 4:19-21 NIV
Needless to say I stopped looking for the verse I had intended to find.
People like to cherry pick the Bible. I know you have to take the good with the bad, but I choose to focus on the good.
So you may think I am some weird, liberal, hippy chick, but you are going to have to take that up with God. He is who inspired my beliefs -- not some rich chicken CEO with ulterior motives.
