After a disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos in the championship round, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots will look to restock and hopefully end with a better result next season. But first the Patriots will look to lock up their in house free agents. Here's a look at the Patriots 2014 free agents and who I believe should and shouldn't be re-signed.
Will Svitek--- Svitek is by no means a great tackle, but he is acceptable at both tackle spots and maybe a little guard too. With Cannon and Vollmer being injured often it's always a good idea to keep a versatile linemen on the roster. Should Patriots Re-Sign = Yes
Brandon Spikes Spikes became somewhat of a home favorite this season for his run stuffing ability and antics off the field. But the fact of the matter remains that he is too slow to cover, and slow run stuffing linebackers are easy to find in the NFL. Especially with a near clone of Spikes ( Hightower) already on the team.
Re-Sign = No
Legarrette Blount --- Strictly speaking from a fan perspective it would be awesome to have the 250lb bull dozer of a runner back next season with the Patriots but this might not be logical. With Blount's relatively consistent play all season and break out games late in the year many teams will be interested in him. If a desperate team comes in and drives up the price the Patriots will have to let Blount walk. Re-Sign = Yes.... at the right price
Ryan Wendell --- The Patriots interior line was downright dreadful this season, most recently being dominated by Terrence Knighten of the Denver Broncos. The Patriots desperately need an improvement over Wendell this off season.
Re-Sign = No ... unless he is re-signed at a cheap price for depth.
Michael Hoomanawanui --- The man they call "Hooman" in New England may not be a household name for most sports fans, but he provides solid depth at the tight end position while also being a very good blocker. He is the perfect type of player to have as a number 3 tight end as i predict he will be next season
Re-Sign = Yes
Dane Fletcher --- Dane Fletcher doesn't make a supreme impact on this Patriot defense, but Bill Belichick loves to carry a ton of linebackers on the roster. The Patriots could use his versatility and depth in his usual smaller role Re-Sign = Yes
Julian Edelman --- The Patriots simply have to bring back Edelman next season. He caught over a hundred passes last season while accumulating over 1000 yards. He is also the veteran punt returner on the team, most importantly he is a safety blanket for the Patriots in case the new receivers they bring in next season don't work out. Re-Sign = Yes
Aqib Talib = As terrible as it is for me to say it the New England Patriots need Aqib Talib. The only problem is Talib doesn't need the Patriots as he will have many offers coming in from around the league. If I had any faith in the other players in the Patriot's secondary I would say don't sign Talib, but this defense needs him. Re-Sign= Yes.... Unless he gets too pricey
Unimportant Free Agents--- in a sport like football that is heavily reliant on a full team effort it is hard to ever say that a player is "unimportant" to a team because every player has a role, but the players listed below simply did not make big enough of an impact to justify a legitimate offer or are easily replaceable through the draft or free agency.
Dj Willaims - Simply a depth signing this season. The Patriots know that they cannot survive with poor quality tight ends again.
Mathew Mulligan -- see above
Andre Carter --- An interesting signing during the middle of the season, Andre Carter was showing a lot of age on the field. With young Michael Buchanan developing and Andre Carter showing little burst to the QB it would be illogical to bring Carter back.
Austin Collie -- Another Depth signing while Thompkins and Dobson were down. Collie has already been cut by the Patriots in the past and will not be coming back to the team. He may stay close though in case the same depth issues hit the Patriots again.
So that's my opinion on the Patriots 2014 free agents, do you agree with who should be re-signed? and as always please share.
