I know that today NBC aired the second episode of The New Normal but I wanted to give a quick recap of the first episode before I dive into the second one.
We meet couple Bryan (Andrew Rannells, from Broadway's Book Of Mormon) and David (Justin Bartha, from The Hangover) who live in Los Angeles. Bryan starts to have baby fever after seeing a baby dressed up the department store (and frankly the baby was freaking adorable so I really cannot blame him one bit). He comes home to his boyfriend and proposes that they have a baby, saying that he will take on the role of fun Dad while David will take on role of strict Dad. The guys go to a company to find an egg donor/surrogate, unfortunately the woman that they chose was not the match for them as she thought what they were doing was gross.
Then we are introduced to Goldie (played by relative newcomer Georgia King) who is a newly single mother, like literally newly single thanks to catching her husband in bed with another woman, who steals her racist/homophobic etc... Grandmother's (played the hilarious Ellen Barkin) car and drives to LA with her daughter Shania (played by newcomer Bebe Wood, who is I already love). While in LA she shares with her daughter that she always wanted to be a lawyer and yep you guessed it that is how she decided to be a surrogate for Bryan and David. The $30,000 that Goldie would get in exchange for being a surrogate would help her and her daughter and a major plus is Goldie believes that love is love no matter what which makes her the best canidate in Bryan and David's eyes.
Of course Goldie's grandmother shows up and tries to stop her but of course the young woman is adament in what she wants to do with her body much to her grandmother's disgust. The episode ended with Goldie moving in with Bryan and David (with her daughter of course) and the guys saying that no matter what they will be there for her (cue the awww's). The episode ended with Goldie taking the pregnancy test.
Also in the show as Bryan's hilarious assistant is NeNe Leakes as Rocky. I may not be a fan of Real Housewives but I love love love NeNe.
All in all the first episode wasn't bad. I enjoyed the pace and while the subject of a gay couple having a child is a touchy subject for some, it didn't bother me at all. I looked at the show for what it truly is, a couple that wants to spread their love to a child and also help out a young mother and her child.
