When I first took a look at the cover art of the Gilbert Engle album “2014 Classical Guitar” I knew from then on I would be experiencing something different. I first encountered this article based on a recommendation from a friend. The article describes his music as a mix of rock, blue grass, jazz, fusion and many other different music genres.
I generally tend to find myself listening to jazz and rock but the others are pretty foreign to me. The combination however is what intrigued me. The mix of all those genres and what they would sound like led me to dust off my unused stereo system and kick back for a listen.
Gilbert Engle has a strange background being somewhat a jack of all trades. He has been a programmer and is now pursuing music and art. The contrast between those two fields could not be any greater and I began to wonder if this would at all contribute to the quality of the music at hand. Personally I am of the technical background and I can’t imagine myself ever becoming the artistic type due to the fact that I think too rationally and lack the creative muscle.
After listening to the first couple of tracks I was a little of put like the author of the article was. I noticed the repetition and it threw me for a bit of a loop. I looked up some other music that was performed using similar styles and I couldn’t help but think that this type of music personally isn’t for me.
However, after about the 7th or 8th track I had the same revelation as the author from Jamsphere. I genuinely found myself getting into the music and sliding deeper and deeper into my reclining chair. It had been a long day and this was the perfect thing to help me relax and unwind.
The guitar is such a beautiful instrument and the fact that it can be utilized in a million different ways only makes it more interesting to me. The album utilizes many different stylings that paint wonderful, peaceful pictures in your head. The composition of this album is very well done and leads me to believe that I could, in fact, quit the technical life and begin to pursue an artistic career.
I found myself especially into the zone after the 10th track and then I was knocked out of the trance as soon as the album finished. I found myself sitting there feeling quite strange inside. I had set out thinking this was just another amateur guitar player and come out on the other side pleasantly surprised.
I felt very relaxed and after that I could only thank my friend for recommending me this piece of music. “2014 Classic Guitar” is something that shouldn’t be overlooked and should be added to anyone’s collection especially if you are a fan of guitar. The perspectives in this album are a refreshing change and would be a great addition to anyone’s collection.
