My Daughter and the Dick Cheney Challenge
Today, I'm regretting raising well informed clever children. As I was driving my daughters and my older daughter's boyfriend to the Avengers last night, I went on a political rant, which is typical for me.My family has been ignoring me for years. My daughter's boyfriend, comes from a prominent Republican family here in town. Quietly he asked, "how many books written by Republicans have you read?" I was impressed with this question for two reasons: he remembered that I read a lot and he had the guts to ask it. I want my children's special friends to be gutsy, but not too gutsy.
I appreciate any question that makes me think and I had to think hard, had I ever read a book written by a Republican? I couldn't recall. I also couldn't recall reading any books written by Democrats. I tend to stay away from books written by politicians. I like books written by academics and historians that I hear interviewed on NPR. I would be a dumb nut without NPR.
I sputtered. "I must have."
"Name one she said."
I sputtered even more. "I know I have!"
"I bet you couldn't read one," daughter said.
"Of course I can."
"I bet you couldn't read one written by Dick Cheney." My smart ass older daughter said.
My other daughter gasped and my husband bite his lip to keep from laughing.
They were waiting for my answer. I debated telling a lie. I'm not above lying to my children for the greater good but I'm known for my honesty.
"You've never read one, " my astute older said.

There's two things you're going to learn about me: I think Dick Cheney is evil and is going to spend eternity sitting next to Hitler in hell. It's my blog so I can be that harsh. The other thing you need to know about me, I can't pass up a challenge, especially from my daughter.
And so began the negotiation. Could it be written about Cheney or by Cheney? Do I have to read a book or can I listen to it? Do I have to finish it or can I quit half way through?
The verdict: I have to listen to a book--the whole thing--written by Dick Cheney. The only book he's written is 576 pages...ugh. Be prepared for lots of moaning and groaning!
