Muppets and Soft Core Porn

Don’t say it’s so!!!

The song that pre-schoolers and parents rock out to at the end of the Muppets; the song that recalls images of childhood for millions of viewers was written for soft-core porn.

According to Slate, the song, which was originally called Viva la Sauna Svedese was written for the Italian movie Sweden: Heaven and Hell. This 1958 “documentary” explores the free sexuality of the Swedish people including wife swapping, a bachelorette party and Walpurgis Night. The Mahna Mahna song plays in the background as a dozen or more Swedish blondes relax in the sauna.

In 1968, the composer, Pier Umiliano, released the song which climbed into the top 100 charts in the US and the UK. It was about this time that Jim Henson was brought aboard to work on a new form of children’s television. Sesame Street was designed to offer an hour-long show about the escapades of the inner city imaginary neighborhood. However, instead of ads featuring toys or candy, the ads for Sesame Street highlighted letters and numbers. The Mahna Mahna song first appeared in November of 1969 and was repeated on the Ed Sullivan Show a few days later. The song was cemented into the public consciousness ever since.

Today, the song has been repeated, poked, prodded and parodied on children and adults comedies alike. The simple tune and repetitive lyrics have rehabilitated the music, reclaiming it from biker gangs and nude models and making it something you can share with your child.
