Actor Michael Clarke Duncan’s sudden and untimely death is a huge tragedy for many reasons but what is most disturbing is that his premature death at the age of 54 could have possibly been prevented by early detection.
Duncan died from complications following a myocardial infarction (or heart attack), which results when there is either an interruption or reduction of blood supply to part of the heart causing some of its tissues to die.
In spite of what many believe, a heart attack is not necessarily a “natural cause” of death. It is usually the first symptom of an underlying problem like heart disease, which is a leading cause of death for men (as well as women) in the U.S. Every minute someone in the U.S. dies from a heart attack. In fact, minutes after I heard the news about Duncan my niece informed me that her young uncle had just succumbed to a heart attack.
What is most saddening is that heart disease is largely preventable. There are many lifestyle choices and related medical conditions that put both men and women at a higher risk for heart disease, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, and alcohol use.
In light of these facts, it is absolutely critical for us all to take action in order to prevent heart disease as it is killing our fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and friends much too soon.
