In 2001 I began drawing exclusively with my non dominant left hand. I called these drawings 'talking heads' because they all had funny little names and no necks. Five years later I had enough Lefty drawings to inhabit a whole world (500 or so!) I had also completely lost track of which hand I was using when I picked up a brush or pen. I like to tell people that I began the Lefty Series because my overly dominant right hand had lost it's sense of humour! And it was true! I was bored with the kind of artwork I was doing and needed to shake things up a bit.
Later on, in August of 2008 I was guided by a dream to turn my Lefty drawings into a tarot deck so that I could give online readings and I started offering these readings on Etsy.
If a client's Soul Reading (which is my special name for psychic-mediumship readings) includes a Lefty Oracle card I explain that "because the Lefty cards were all drawn with my non-dominant left hand, the ‘intuitive’ hand (controlled by the right brain) they do not come with any kind of written interpretation. That part is up to you, so go with your intuition and trust whatever images, thoughts or feeling come up. It’s time to trust yourself and put your intuition to work – go!"
"Now the Real Work Begins"
The reason I don't include a written interpretation along with the Lefty Oracle cards is because they don't have one! I spent years working on poetry, stories and quips to accompany the Lefties, but nothing seemed to fit them perfectly. My own personal psychic advisor told me that she had seen the Lefties in a vision all lined up as if they were actors waiting to audition. I really like that vision and I know the Lefties do too.
Several years ago I created a whole series of Lefty chapbooks called "Gadfly" and postcard zines called "Songs of the Lefties" (sixteen whole issues) that had quite a few subscribers and I also created a Lefty book called "Odds & Ends - A Collection of Friends - Recipes, Rhymes & Incantations".
During this time I changed the spelling of my name from "Crabbe"to "Crab" and I called myself "Kitty" at poetry readings and at the book club I started - it just fit in a Lefty kinda way.
My friends think either very highly or very lowly of the Lefties, but I will always call the Lefties best friends and I know you will too, once you get to know them. The Lefties will be participating as Moon Muses in the new course I'll be mentoring called "Awaken the Divine Feminine" at the Wise Woman University starting March 1, 2010.
The Lefties and I enjoyed these comments very much:
"You must travel to some secret place when you create them" ~ Jennice Hyden, Acupuncturist
"Zen-like" ~ Mary Fleener, Cartoonist.
"The world needs more of your kind of clever silliness" ~ Linda Brunker, Sculptor
"Self esteem boosting" ~ Los Angeles Times, Calendar
"I've never seen anything like it...I laughed out loud" - Michael Pontacolini, Spoon Magazine
"Beauty, colorful, pretty, delicate, Murano glass come to life almost too beautiful to touch...I fall in love with the Klimt-inspired drawing...I am charmed. An aging art snob with a guerilla aesthetic. I flip through card after card and start scheming ways to steal K. Crab's work. Beg her to keep drawing!" Andree LaChapelle, Broken Pencil Magazine
"They're so delicate, succinct, playful, refreshing" ~ Susan Mrosek, Artist/Author
I believe that the Lefties are meant to open others in the same way that they opened me, through intuition and the forcing of conscious choice making and risk taking, risks that transform lives in positive and soul affirming ways - that's what they did for me and that's what they can do for you too.
