Learning to Take Ownership for the good and bad!

We have lost our minds!  Seriously, lost our minds!

Have you heard about the Florida Man Guilty of DUI Manslaughter suing the Family HE KILLED? Yeah, you READ THAT CORRECTLY!

My daughter sent me the blog article yesterday.  Her exact word! “SAD”.

I am asking you, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD?

We have to teach OWNERSHIP again.  We have to teach taking responsibility for our actions, AGAIN.  See, I think with all this “THERAPY” (which is good to an extent) we have taken some things a little too far.  Therapy should help us ACCEPT things BUT NOT EXCUSE our actions or set blame ELSEWHERE.  Therapy should help US OWN up to our ACTIONS.  LEARN FROM THEM and move on.  Do I think we need to persecute ourselves forever for our mistakes, mishaps or failures?  Hell no!  BUT, we do need to OWN them.  Learn from them and move on. Sometimes, I think Therapy leads people to think they are EXCUSED,maybe not what the Therapist meant but somehow patients are getting mixed vibes!

We seem to be good at BLAME, EXCUSE, JUSTIFY or FLAT OUT DENY! Now, we love to OWN THE GOOD!  We will gladly tell you how hard we work for something but when we mess up we seem to take another approach.  Listen, no one likes to screw up.  It is painful.  GOSH, I know how painful it is.  I have many screw ups under my belt.  Way too many to count!  Oh, and I am sure that I will have more to come BUT I own them and I do my very level best to learn from them.  I try hard not to continue making the same mistakes over and over again.

The problem with not owning up to your mistakes, mishaps and failures well, leads to not changing and continuing to make the same mistakes. Worse, we get people like the Florida man!  I imagine, it is hard for the young Florida man to realize what he did and I am sure his sister wants to believe in her heart of hearts that it wasn’t ALL his fault but sometimes there is healing for the soul to admit the wrong and even though the family will never forgive him, just like we all understand we can’t always be forgiven, there is still growth in admitting to the wrong and learning from it.

Oh well, what has happened to owning up and moving forward!

Do you think our society is getting carried away with excuses?
