This week was the first week of an online book club I started called "The Girls Who Read" featuring entertaining and interesting books we love. I know most of you love to read, so feel free to jump into the club at any time. I hope you'll email me any ideas or suggestions on what we should read next. (For more info, scroll down to the FAQ section.)

Join me for our ongoing book chat and Twitter party using the hashtag #TheGirlsWhoRead. Following the release of the main blog post about the book, we will have a Twitter party. What is a Twitter party? Find out here. Subscribe to our list on Twitter and tweet to me if you'd like to be added to the book club list on Twitter. If you're not on Twitter, see below.

If you're not on Twitter, don't worry! Most of the discussions will take place on this blog in the comments. To find new posts, just search for the category "The Girls Who Read." You'll find all our posts there (after July 3rd). You can also follow me on another social media account. (See right top sidebar for a list of places where we can connect.) New books will be discussed every three weeks, but feel free to go at your own pace!

About the Southern Vampire Series

Normally, I'm not a fan of vampire books. I don't watch vampire movies or TV shows. It's just not my thing. However, I love the Sookie Stackhouse books. They remind me of why I first loved reading as a kid: the ability an author has to transport the reader into a fictional world. For me, reading as a child was a fun escape. Learning about new people, places and events. Reading for entertainment is like taking a vacation. Sookie is also this really great, strong female lead who kicks ass. Literally. Even vampire ass. This series has a great cast of characters, a pretty believable Cajun setting, and a great romance to keep you hooked. These books are a quick read, full of adventure, and they're perfect for summer!

I hope you'll join us as we read Dead Until Dark and start discussions on July 10th.

If you're a fellow blogger, please feel free to post your own blog post about the book we are discussing on or after the final post goes live (every three weeks, starting with July 24th; see calendar below) and link your blog post in the comments below the main post so we can visit. You can also send me a tweet letting me know you've posted about the book.

How do you choose books to read? We read anything and everything. I majored in English literature and spent my entire life reading classics, which are all great, but most of us have read those. And while classics certainly are full of merit, who doesn't love a fun read? My favorite types of books right now are chick-lit, romance, mystery and anything with a strong girl character. If you have a book you think might be a good fit for us, email me or tweet me your suggestions. If it's a good fit, we'll read your book when there's a free spot on the calendar. (Disclaimer: Because we read new books once a month and because we already have a full calendar, seeing your book on the schedule may take awhile. I also hand select each book based on a variety of standards, so there's a chance you may not see your selection chosen.)

What if I already read the novels you suggest but still want to chat? Of course you're welcome to join us! The more the merrier. Just jump right in!

Do I have to be a girl to join in? Absolutely not! Men have joined this book club, too. Just jump into our discussions online and use the hashtag or use #DontReadAlone.

How often do you read new books? We start a new book every month. Feel free to read them at your own pace. (I'm a slow reader myself!)
