A friendship of biblical proportions.

The friendship between Jonathan and David is one of the most moving stories in the bible. In 1 Samuel 18:1, it says that Jonathan "loved him [David] as his own soul." A friend who has been struggling with inoperable, advancing cancer wanted to give something to her best friend, the one who has been with her for just about every diagnosis, test, treatment, clinical trial and hard moment for three years. Both are deeply involved in their synagogues, so it seemed appropriate to tap into a biblical ideal of friendship. Because Hebrew is a gendered language, we changed the phrase to "she loved her as her own soul" for this papercut gift: "Hi ohevet otah k'nafshah shelah."

It is deeply gratifying to create pieces of art to honor sacred relationships and to mark sacred occasions. If there is something you'd like to say Jewishly and beautifully, send your thoughts here.
