Getting educated on where the candidates stand on education, I was a
bit perplexed on where McCain stood. If McCain's plan was a puzzle, it
would have a few pieces missing. On of the common themes I came across
for McCain seem to be competition and choice. Sounds good on the outside but not so pretty on the inside.
Competition in Education right now, well isn't a fair competition. With a wide gap between wealthy community schools and lower income schools, the competition
would be similar to letting an NFL team play a round of football with a
high school team. Before we can
educate to compete we must make the competition fair.
saying he wouldn't try to level the playing field, but his focus seems
to be on teachers. McCain wants to threw incentives to top graduates to go to low income schools to teach.
Great except a teacher is only as good as the tools provided. Will
larger class sizes, old, outdated text books and other circumstances
keep these great teachers from living up to their potential? If McCain
also has his way these schools could lose additional income if students
move to charter schools, low income schools with even less funding.
think before we start throwing around the word competition in schools
we need to give low income community school ready for the fight. We are
only as good as our next generation, giving more to them is our
greatest investment. McCain's plan in my opinion would hurt more then
help the schools that really need the attention.
