The NFL Playoffs are watched year in and year out by avid sports fans and average Joe's alike, but Roger Goodell's talk of expanding the NFL playoffs could ruin the interest. If Goodell would look around at other leagues like the NBA and NHL he would know that expanding the NFL playoffs would be the worst mistake of his career. Although expanding the NFL playoffs would make the number one seed more important because it would be the only seed with a bye week, it also would water down the playoff competition with the addition of weak teams.
To prove my point you have to look at the lower seeds in other leagues. In the NBA currently the bottom two seeds, Detroit and Charlotte, are 16-22 an 16-23 respectively and they Are Going to Make the Playoffs!!! These teams clearly do not belong in the playoffs and when playing the Heat or Pacers are going to get embarrassed and probably swept.
In the NFL this season if the playoffs were expanded the Steelers would have made the Playoffs. The Steelers would have been matched up against the New England Patriots in the first round. For those of you who don't remember the Patriots dropped 55 points on the Steelers in a game that was hardly competitive. Does that team deserve to make it into the playoffs at 8-8?
With almost 50 percent of a league making the Playoffs it waters down competition, with weak teams making the playoffs that thoroughly don't deserve it. Despite the Patriots missing the playoffs several years ago at 11-5 and the Cardinals missing the playoffs this season when clearly better than several wildcard teams, it still is a better idea to keep the playoffs at the same size, because quite frankly neither of those teams were Superbowl favorites and probably wouldn't have won.
If Roger Goodell is serious about expanding the NFL Playoffs he would make more money, but it will be at the expense of losing the interest of tons of hardcore NFL fans.
