Dancing with the Stars Recap: The Top 8 "Get Down to Motown"

Will a Motown Queen get sent home on "her" week?

This week's Dancing with the Stars was a tribute to Motown and featured performances from a relentlessly unblinking Smoky Robinson, an underused Martha Reeves, a still-got-it Temptations and a few words from an AMAZING looking Barry Gordy…seriously, where is his painting in the attic?

There was also a series of performances from the members of the cast of a new Motown musical tribute touring show that should be sub-titled Disturbing Cultural Appropriation Lives On. Did anyone else find it so weird to have those four whiter than white guys be the ones who got the gig to keep Motown alive?

This episode also featured a dance marathon ("four whole minutes long!!!") at the end. But let's dig in to the dances:

1. Glady and Tristan danced a Rumba to My Girl by the Temptations

Gladys has lovely musicality. When she's on, she's really an elegant classy pleasure to watch. But yes, she forgot some moves; she looked a little lost sometimes. But when she didn't have that look of fear,  she looked awesome. I think she's at risk. If people voted dancers *off* the show, she'd never be the one to go, because I think people would feel bad voting her off on Motown Week. The question is whether they feel bad enough about sending her off this week to actively vote to keep her on? I don't know.

2. Derek and Maria danced a Foxtrot to Jimmy Mac by Martha Reeves

After a few hot weeks, they continued on with the strong performances, although perhaps not quite as awesome as the past two weeks. They had some un-synched mishap with the fancy stair dancing, but other than that it was light, frothy and charming. I can't imagine she's oging anywhere any time soon, especially dancing with fan favorite Derek.

3. Roshon and Chelsie danced a Rumba to Cruising  by Smoky Robinson

OK, I think Roshon did a nice job. It is true, however, that he was a little sharp and quick for my taste, as opposed to fluid and sensual, but he really committed to the hip moves and sexuality of the dance. That being said, this is an exceptionally strong Top 8, and I think Roshon doesn't have the huge fan base, huge muscles, or huge sympathy factor to last much longer, and tonight might even be his last night.

4. Katherine and Mark danced a Samba to I Can't Get Next To You by The Temptations

As always, Mark mugs a little too much for me, but I thought Katherine did a great job. She got the bounce; she got the fun; she got the carefree spirit; she got the booty shaking impact of the Samba. It's hard to imagine Katherine not making the final.

5. Donald and Peta danced a Foxtrot to The Way You Do the Things You Do by The Temptations

You know what? I often think the football players do better on this show than their dancing warrants, because people are shocked they can dance at all. But Donald does a VERY nice job. He really commits himself too, as much as Roshon. There were a couple of close calls on balance, which was a little surprising given his core and upper body strength, but no mishaps. Plus, I thought she might have trained some of his personal charm our of him...until about half way through, when his charm really kicked it up a notch. But all in all, I'm quite surprised to find Donald among my favorites.

6. Melissa and Maks danced a Viennese Waltz to Ooh Baby Baby by Smoky Robinson

As you may have noticed I haven't been a Melissa fan. This week she did her best job yet, although her shoulders rode up, just as Carrie Ann pointed out. Now in this strong field, I still think this puts Melissa totally at risk, but perhaps she's reaching a turning point and will improve steadily from here.

7. Jaleel and Kym danced a Cha Cha Cha to Ain't Too Proud to Beg by The Temptations

That was great…it definitely got him back to week one level of confidence and fun. Honestly I don't think He's going to make the finals…I there are several stronger dancers and stronger pulls on the fans, but I'm glad to see Jaleel back in business.

8. William and Cheryl danced a Rumba to Being with You by Smoky Robinson

OK, I get what Len was saying about raunchy on this rumba. I might have considered it muy caliente instead, but it was heavy on the running of hands up and down bodies. Moreover, it was not so much less sharp than Roshon and Chelsie's Rumba. William is right that expectations were high for his Rumba, and from a dance perspective, I didn't think it was his strongest. Does that matter much? Nah.

Bottom line for the bottom two:

Should be: Melissa and Gladys with Gladys going home

Will be: Roshon and Gladys with Roshon going home

But what did you think?
