MTV-reality and action sports-star Rob Dyrdek set a Guinness World Record for the Farthest Reverse Ramp Jump by a Car with a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic RS in front of spectators last week in California.
Dyrdek, host of MTV’s “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory,” is not new to performing stunts in Chevrolet’s little Sonic hatchback. In 2011, he successfully set another Guinness World Record by performing a 360-degree kick-flip off a ramp in a Chevrolet Sonic. He’s also not new to setting records: Last week’s backwards ramp jump marks Dyrdek’s 22nd Guinness World Record.
The 89-foot, 3.25-inch reverse ramp jump record was performed before spectators on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, while MTV filmed the jump for the Season Finale of “Fantasy Factory,” which is set to air on March 13, 2014 at 10:30 PM ET/PT on MTV. In order to qualify for the Guinness World Records achievement, Dyrdek had to successfully land the Sonic on the catch ramp and be able to drive away from the stunt. He did both.
As with any high-speed action stunts, safety is a priority: Even though it’s a small car, the Chevrolet Sonic offers 10 standard air bags and high-strength steel as part of its body structure, making the small car a strong choice for this challenge. In fact, Chevrolet is especially proud of the car's excellent safety rating: Sonic is the first and only car in its class to receive a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Administration, and the 2013 model was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
