After a tumultuous year with the Red Sox, it's buh-bye for Bobby Valentine. The season started off rough - with major discord between the manager and players - and ended with the ballclub's worst season in almost 50 years.
This tweet made it official:
BREAKING: Bobby Valentine will not return as #RedSox Manager in 2013. EVP/GM Ben Cherington to lead managerial search.
Few were surprised when the news broke that Valentine was fired Thursday, the day after Boston's season ended with a humiliating 14-2 loss to the Yankees.
"I understand this decision," Valentine said. "This year in Boston has been an incredible experience for me, but I am as disappointed in the results as are ownership and the great fans of Red Sox Nation. ... I'm sure next year will be a turnaround year."
What was supposed to be a season of celebration for Fenway's 100th anniversary was instead the worst under the current management. And though injuries may have doomed the Red Sox anyway, Valentine's abrasive manner and clumsy handling of players undermined his authority in the clubhouse and alienated him from his team.

Valentine (who formerly managed the Texas Rangers and New York Mets) went 69-93 this season and the Red Sox did not spend a single day in first place. The last time that happened was in 1996.
We've all heard that there is no "I" in team and obviously there's no place in Boston for an ego as large as Valentine's. So, is it more important be able to relate to players than to be a great X's and O's guy? It will be interesting to see who replaces the ousted manager, and what kind of management style he brings. With most aspects of the team now in ruins, it will take some kind of miracle to resurrect the franchise.
While Valentine's firing was probably the worst kept secret in baseball, fans were relieved when the announcement was finally made. With one year left on his two-year contract, Valentine will receive $2.5 million to hit the road.
Bobby V. - looks like it's a wrap for you.
