Dear Bill Nye,
Growing up, watching Bill Nye the Science Guy was a treat. I learned a lot. It was cool. It was fun. It was educational.
Just this past year, I was reminded of the awesomeness that was Bill Nye the Science Guy. I got excited. My little boys were almost old enough to watch! Probably just a year or two more before they can start really enjoying this show.
Well, Bill, it's not gonna happen.
You see, this mama just can't get behind you anymore.
This recent video you have put out on the internet has officially turned this mama off from your shows for all time.
Bill Nye, your video states that parents of Christian faith should not harm their children by teaching about creation and that by doing so, we are ruining our children and our country for future generations. You even titled the video "Creationism is inappropriate for children."
Sorry, Bill, but it is YOU who are inappropriate for children.
Evolution, you see, is a THEORY, not a fact. There is no concrete proof that all we see now came about by random genetic mutations and adaptation. Now, I am not saying that no sort of evolution has ever taken place. Species adapt to their environments. I am not disputing evolution completely. I DO dispute evolution as the sole explanation of the beginning of life.
Why do I feel you are inappropriate for children, Mr. Nye?
Because you are contributing to the breakdown of families. You are encouraging families to shelve deeply held beliefs so that children can grow up "scientifically." Religion is fine for the clueless adults, but let's make sure we keep that garbage away from the kids. Um, no, thank you.
If you could speak directly to the children of creationists, what would you say?
Hang in there.
There is another amazing, exciting, inspiring way to know the world, one that will fill you with joy and reverence. Pick your battles with grownups. These creation ideas are important to the grownups in your life right now. Accept that.
The assumption that outside entities know better what is best for our children than we, as parents, do is appalling. Parents love their children and want what is best for them. Parents gather information and then use what works for that specific child in that specific family. There is no formula that will work for every family.
Our children need us. They need faith. They need values. They need to be WHOLE. Children, Mr. Nye, are capable of learning scientific principals while maintaining a belief in creation. It takes far more faith to believe that all of THIS just happened randomly. All this order out of randomness. I'm sorry. I can't get on board with that. Too many gaps in the evidence. You may think I am silly, foolish, brainwashed.
Whatever. I know Christ. I know His love for me. I know that when my faith is tested or attacked, He remains.
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
Bill, I feel sorry for you. My heart breaks that you do not know this amazing love of Christ. My family will be praying for you, because MAN, are you missing out! You are entitled to your beliefs. You are entitled to speak out about them. I am entitled to filter what my children are exposed to.
So, Mr. Nye, you can keep your beliefs. You have no place in our household as an authority figure or teacher. Mama bear is standing firm and claiming this house for Christ. As much as I enjoyed you as a child, you are not welcome in our home. Our family is strong. We will not allow those who would divide our family to remain a part of this house.
You, Mr. Nye, are officially evicted. (though I'd be happy to talk about Christ over a cup of coffee)
