I used to write poetry a long time ago, until I realized that it was a waste of time (for me). I now know I was never truly good at it. You can't really make money off it. It rarely changes people's lives. But, it was a good outlet to express myself and my adolescent angst.
When I became a young adult and then adult, I found more value in straight-forward writing, not the fragmented, possible double-meaning communication rife in poetry--with all its clevar similes and metaphors. Yet, I do appreciate a very good poem. Words can dance on a page with the right rhythm, rhyme and punctuation. Ever now and then a poem will inspire -- and that can influence lives. One comes to mind; it's a poem that I just love. It's brilliant. It's beautiful. It's my favorite...
