Super Women: The Ladies Rock "The Avengers"
Have ya heard the buzz? Of course you have. You've been hit over the head with it multiple times the past few weeks. The Avengers is opening in theaters. Like, NOW. This has been one of THE most anticipated superhero movies in the last few years... not only because it has a crazy Marvel comics fan-following, but because it's got some of the hottest stars starring in it. (Hello, Robert Downey Jr. Watching him as Iron Man will never get old to me... and I don't even like superhero movies all that much.) I'll get to the chicks in a second, but first, the plot: RDJ, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson star as just a few of the iconic band of superheroes based on the comic book series first published in 1963. The movie basically tells the story how the ultimate dream team of superheroes was first called to action by Marvel's famous Nick Fury character (Samuel Jackson)... uniting Iron Man (Downey), The Incredible Hulk (Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Johansson) to save our world from cosmic doom. I'll tell you straight up that the storyline isn't all that creative, but the chemistry between the stars IS. Not to mention the script is funny as hell. You WILL laugh. And the action is unbelievably fascinating - and nonstop - from start to finish. It's a perfect wild ride. Although parents should be advised of minor language, suggestive humor, and lots of fights, guns and explosions that some of you might have a problem with should your kids skew younger... The Avengers guarantees a fantastic family night at the movies.
The best part? The two chicks in the movie put the guys to shame. "I wanna be Scarlett," Samuel Jackson admitted at the movie's press conference. "I just want to be that cute for like 15 minutes." Cute? Okaaaay. If you consider an uber-intelligent character that outwits even the sharpest and kniving villains while rocking killer leather outfits and kicking serious a$$ in high heels while making Jeremy Renner look like a wimp... then I want to be that 'cute' too. "I love getting beat up by Scarlett - wouldn't you?" Yes, that's a quote from Renner himself. Yeaahhhh!
And according to director Joss Whedon, the best stuntperson on set happened to be the other chick in the film... a mom to a 3 year old little girl in real life. Cobie Smulders of CBS's How I Met Your Mother fame plays the uber-intelligent (although superpower-less) Agent Maria Hill. Yup, she's got the tight leather suits too.. and the best moves on a wire. "Cobie is one of the best stunt people on the Avengers team," Whedon fessed up. "She did all her own jumpin' and flippin' and shootin' and stuff... she's got that tomboy thing. You know what I'm talking about... that hot mom tomboy thing." Whedon also admitted to making an extra effort to add frames of Smulders' face during a flipping action sequence in the movie so audiences could see her clearly and know that it wasn't the work of a stuntwoman. "Yeah, that was fun to do," Smulders grinned.
So thanks for showing what some of us girls can do, Joss Whedon. Female characters that have it all: smarts, sex appeal and seriously-witty dialogue are just what the movies need more of. And the slick costumes aren't too shabby either.
