'American Idol' Recap: The Top 6 Sing Two Songs

My biggest complaint last time American Idol had four judges was that they spent WAY too much time yapping, and not enough time singing. So I was thrilled to see that we heard two songs per contestant this week, for the entire Top 6.

The evening had two rounds:

Round #1: Songs by Bacharach & David

Round #2: Songs They Wish They'd Written

Let's dig in, by contestant.

 1. Angie

a. "Anyone Who Had a Heart"

She's got a great voice, but there wasn't a lot of authentic, believable heartbreak there. Keith was exactly right with all of his commentary: She shouldn't rely only on her voice. And she needs to find a way to get to the heart of a song, even when it's not some emo song.

b. "Love Came Down" by Kari Jobe

As a song, this was pretty generic, actually, but she sounded pretty fantastic. And it's true that when she sits at the piano, it brings something more heartfelt and deep out of her.

She's still going to be safe, pretty sure about that.

2. Amber

a. "I Say A Little Prayer for You"

She did a great job with this. There's something about Amber that's kind of timeless. She can smoothly glide in and out of genres, making retro songs modern and modern songs classic. Pretty amazing for someone so young. Her little falsetto moments were surprisingly off the mark, vocal, which is unusual for her, but the rest was spot-on vocally.

b. "Girl on Top" by Beyonce

She is really so musical. She knows when to hit the syncopation, when to be right on the beat. Maybe one downfall is that she doesn't really move so well, and another is wardrobe -- how many ripped things can they find for her to wear? I could have totally done without the '80s Bananarama outfit.

I think she's safe, too.

3. Lazaro

a. "Close to You"

Wow. What to say? He just needs to go home now. Come on, America! That was TERRIBLE. So pitchy; didn't make the key change; and the suit was too much as well. It's just inconceivable that he's getting this many votes 'cause he a super-sweet guy and good story. It's getting embarrassing.

b. "Angels" by Robbie Williams

Better than his first song. Which isn't saying much.

What else can I say to convince America to vote Lazaro off now?

4. Kree

a. "What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love"

Kree did a good job making this song her own and bringing some musical variety to a pretty repetitive song. Up until this point, everyone was doing the Bacharach and David songs pretty straight, and by the book. I liked the change-up.

b. "Help Me Make It Through the Night" by Kris Kristofferson

Nice. Not my cuppa. But very nice, classic country.

Well, she's obviously got a huge fan base, and I think it's quite possible she's on a Carrie Underwood trajectory.

5. Janelle

a. "What Do You Get When You Fall In Love?"

Janelle is lucky Lazaro did such a horrible job, because this was uncharacteristically weak and pitchy. I mean usually she may not be the strongest, especially in duets, but this was actually weak.

b. "The Dance" by Garth Brooks (written by Tony Arata)

Ugh. I'm sick of this song, I'm sorry. So for me, this was boring, and she had some rough patches.

We got too much country going on now for my taste. I'm ready for one of 'em to go home, and it's not going to be Kree.

6. Candice

a. "Don't Make Me Over"

Oh, people, please. That was awesome. It's nice to have a grown-up on that stage bringing some depth to a song and a style that everyone else made seem dated and cheesy. Bowled me over.

b. "Love Song" by The Cure

You go, DIVA. That is all I can say. WOW.

Come on now, Candice is all that. To me, she is head and shoulders above the crowd. Others have amazing voices, but she is the only one who brings the depth and guts and heart and soul.

Bottom line for the Bottom Two:

Should be: Lazaro and Janelle, with Lazaro going home. Please GOD.

Will be: Lazaro and Janelle with, sadly, Janelle going home.

But what did you think?
