1957 Nude Woman Oil Painting

Here's a quirky and whimsical "nude" painting that is dated 1957 on the back. Unsigned, but attributed to H.L. Rittenhouse, this beauty is done in oil on mason board.  Rittenhouse was a Poughkeepsie artist who was known for his caricatures of the horses and their jockies at the Saratoga Race Track in Upstate New York. This is one of his earlier works and shows some wear, especially on the edges.

I used to frequent an auction house outside of Woodstock and found many interesting pieces of art including this one, part of a package of three Rittenhouse works and my favorite.  The other is a little more grotesque and the first one sold to an art dealer in Andes, New York some time ago.

The partner and I spent hours at this auction, escaping the city and the family.  This was before cell phones reached the area and it afforded us a place to go as relative strangers, city slickers, if you will.  I could write a book on the characters who showed up on a Saturday night to this country auction.  I could also write a book about the family who ran the auction.  Maybe someday I will.

Measurements are 16" x 10".  Would look great framed and hung in a Mid-Century setting.  Presently, it's in my etsy shop.
