One of the most anticipated events for fashion bloggers in town for New York Fashion Week wasn't a show, but the Independent Fashion Bloggers' Dress-Up Soiree. It wasn't just a party (though a splendid time was guaranteed for all, with tiaras, feather boas, and hats provided), it was a discussion of where we, as fashion bloggers, are and where we're going.
There were two panels scheduled for the night, and the first featured a wide variety of fashion bloggers -- Susie Bubble of Style Bubble, Geri of because im addicted, Wendy Brandes, Jessica of What I Wore, and Carolyn of The Daily Obsession.
The discussions ranged on many topics, including:
- How do I become involved in the fashion blogging community? How do I get more readers?
- How do I protect my copyright? On the other side, how do I attribute properly if I want to borrow someone else's photos or content?
- How do we keep up the inspiration and the drive?
- Where do fashion bloggers go from here, and are we going up or are we peaking now?
The answers are pretty much universal for any blogger: Be honest in your voice and your writing, be honest in your passion, reach out with commenting and participating in groups like IFB, and most of all, be yourself. Your readers will find you. It can take a long time -- most of the bloggers on the panel have been blogging for several years -- but it does happen with patience, honesty, and hard work.
But are fashion bloggers peaking? Susie Bubble suggested that she believes so, that we've now gotten to a point where bloggers are designing lines for stores, being featured on magazine covers, and getting front row seats at NYFW. Fashion bloggers are the hip new novelty, the media darlings for the moment, but eventually it will all come back down to earth again.
The official recap will be up at Independent Fashion Bloggers tomorrow (Thursday), including video and photos of the event. I highly suggest that you check out the resources available at IFB, no matter what type of blogger you are.
Want to know what everyone wore? Here are some great recaps and photo posts from the soiree!
