At fifty-nine I was enjoying my long hair and the compliments of other ladies that thought they would grow their locks longer. I heard that every man really wants their women to have long flowing hair that reminds them of a model. I get it...but they don't have to take care of it and I don't look that great with it pulled back in a ponytail. When I am singing, performing a drama or speaking I spray my hair with "mega hold" hair spray so that it is almost like having a hat on my head.
So, yesterday when my hairstylist asked if I wanted a trim I pointed to a picture of Catherine Heigl with real short, sassy hair and told her to go for it. She was surprised, but what she didn't know was that I was trying to get her out of her comfort zone. In the past when I asked her to do something different she just cut my hair the same style just shorter. So this time she could not mistake my intentions...I wanted it cut short and stylish. I also told her that if I began to cry to ignore me and continue cutting. (I have never done that in the shop!) I was happy with the results.
My granddaughter was the first to notice and as she ran to meet me she was so animated as she exclaimed, "I LOVE your hair!" She used her southern accent to draw out the word LOVE. At nine she is so dramatic and oddly it made me feel younger knowing that I met her approval. Among my friends the comments were very favorable and they said it made me look younger. Of course the real verdict came later when my husband looked at me....and he loved it too!
So today I will see if I can style it myself using the tips from my stylist on how to get the lift and look. This might be when I break down in tears but if I can't handle a change in hairstyle I am getting old!
