In Arizona, I worked in a salon for almost eight years. Throughout that time, I had the best hair and skin of my life. Then I moved to California. I didn't get my hair done for like two years, my skin went to hell, I began getting sun spots from spending so much time at the beach—and I was the happiest I'd ever been. Moving to California was the best decision of my life; frizzy hair, sun spots, and all.
But as I get older, I have started noticing a dramatic change in my skin. What was once bright, smooth, and supple is now flat, laden with issues, and covered in sun spots. I am all about organic everything, so after a bit of searching, I found this amazing mask on Beauty Banter, and I knew I had to try it.
Why Honey? Why Lemon? Why Yogurt?
Honey is naturally antibacterial, soothing, and healing to the skin. It has been used for thousands of years as a skin healer and beauty product. It is used, even in some allopathic medicine, as a skin healer (for example, helping to heal skin ulcers). Because of this skin healing action, it may be helpful for people with acne.Honey is also softening and moisturizing.
Lemon juice has natural antibacterial properties that make it a good choice to help cure acne and prevent further breakouts. Using lemon juice on blackheads has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of blackheads. Lemon juice is a natural exfoliant since the citric acid acts as a gentle "skin peel" that removes the top layer of dead skin cells. This will result in a smooth complexion when used regularly. Other benefits of using lemon juice on the skin may include brightening or lightening the skin, moisturizing and toning oily skin, and fighting wrinkles.
Yogurt for skin has been used since ancient times. In India, using yogurt for skin is still valued as It lightens dark spots and blemishes and helps protect your face with its antioxidant properties. It’s just a tad bit acidic, which makes it great as an exfoliator, and it restores balance to your skin’s natural pH makeup.
The DIY Facial
- Juice of half an organic lemon
- 2 Tbsp of organic, local honey
- 1/4 cup full-fat plain yogurt
Mix ingredients together until combined. Apply it all over a clean face, avoiding eye area. Leave on for 15-20 min and rinse off. You can try to leave it on longer, but the acidity of these products can cause redness, so don't leave it on too long. I use this three times a week for 15 minutes each.
I've been extremely pleased with the results of this little DIY mask: Noticeably lighter spots, cleared up acne (not overnight, but with continued use), and saved me bundles. This is definitely a must-try, and you probably have everything you need to make it already, anyway.
