It’s Flannel Season in Northern California and some of us are downright giddy about it. While front-yard signs and bumper stickers pop up with election campaign slogans, I’d like to see one that says, “Time to get our flannel on.”
I love flannel - in plaid, in solid colors, and in prints. Flannel is nice around the house, in a cozy throw tossed on the couch and replacing summer’s cool cotton bed sheets. Flannel’s fine when it’s new, even better old and faded, and maybe at its best when it’s warm from the dryer.
A partial list of things that go with flannel: Coffee, tea, stew, biscuits, tomato-rice soup, chocolate, jeans. chicken and dumplings, fireplaces, jammies. This could go on and on.
If I opened a store, I would call it “Flannel!” If I owned a restaurant I’d name it “Flannel!” no matter what kind of food we served. If I knew how to write a song, I’d write one about flannel.
There’s nothing not to like about flannel. I wear it as often as I can for as long as this too-short season lasts. Today? Blue and black plaid shirt and thanks for asking.
