At Sunday’s Grammy awards, Janelle Monae hit the red carpet with a matte face, bold red lips, and luscious lashes. Although her signature color palette is black and white, her makeup always seems to tie in with her classic ensembles. Her face is always nothing short of flawless, with bold pops of color.
What I really liked about Janelle Monae’s Grammys look is that it also works for daytime. Red lips and sexy eyes can really transform not only your looks, but your mood, any time of the day.

Check out my tips on how to achieve Janelle’s fierce face:
To get Monae’s look, it's important to start out with clean smooth skin and build from there.
You should use a gentle, non-abrasive scrub to get smooth skin. The scrub serves as a buffer and makes skin baby bottom soft.
After scrubbing, I would use a toner. This helps to get rid of any residue from products and helps your moisturizer adhere to your skin.
Start with a concealer that is at least two shades lighter than your complexion. If you don’t have really dark circles under your eyes, then one shade lighter will be fine.
Then use a matte foundation that is not too chalky or paste-like. Make sure you blend very well, so that everything looks even.
Set your foundation with a powder.
Janelle’s cheekbones look amazing, and I’m pretty sure that’s because her makeup artist contoured them. To get that chiseled cheek bones look, take a pencil and hold it up on top of your cheekbones. Brush a highlighter on top of your cheekbones above the pencil.
Use blush on the apples of your cheeks. Follow this with a bronzer right under the blush, brushing it in a half-moon shape around your forehead and hairline.

Use a flesh-toned eyeshadow.
Everyone is into long, full lashes, so you can either get a pair of full, thick lashes or just triple up on the mascara.
Line top and bottom of eyes with black liquid liner.
Use a matte red lipstick that is rich in color.
Layer clear lip gloss over the matte lipstick.
And you're done!
