Beauty Recipe: Citrus Thyme Body Scrub

I’ve recently become obsessed with beauty blogs, particularly those featuring video tutorials. MyBirchbox subscription is probably the cause of this infatuation, what with the lovely handful of skin, hair and body products that arrive in my mailbox every month. It’s kind of scary how easy it is to become smitten with products you probably don’t need, but I have gotten some really nice full-sized eyeliners, nail polishes and lip colors so a lot of the items are ones I would use anyway.

Let me get to my point before my Birchbox love rambling gets out of control. As a result of my recent interest in beauty products, I’ve been introduced to exfoliating scrubs and now that I know how wonderful they are, I can’t imagine ever not using them. The problem is that they’re often very (emphasis on “very”) expensive, and if you exfoliate a couple times a week like I now do, it’s easy to go through them quickly. This is why, for the first time, I’m sharing a DIY recipe that will let you exfoliate regularly and affordably. Now, I know this is a literature and food blog but all the ingredients for this body scrub recipe can be found in your kitchen! That’s justification enough for this post.

I made this citrus thyme body scrub for myself last week and immediately made another batch for a friend because I loved how soft and smooth it left my skin. The batch I made her was small since she’ll be traveling back home with it this weekend, but the one I made myself was large because I’m…obsessed with this stuff. The reason I’m telling you this is that the recipe below perfectly fills a 5.4-ounce jar such as this one (pictured above), but it can be easily scaled up using the same proportions. Next time, I’m going to gift this scrub in something like this adorable chalkboard-labeled jar.

So here’s my “recipe” for homemade citrus thyme body scrub. I’m obsessed with the light scent that it leaves on my skin, the deep earthiness of the thyme mingling with the freshness of the citrus. (BTW: Adding this to my shower has really helped keep the thyme leaves out of my drain. You should probably do it too.)
