Why do I get that overwhelming urge to visit my favorite discount clothier, TJ Maxx, or my fave resale shop, Clothes Mentor? I’ve literally had to fight myself, in my mind of course, not to go shopping for the last couple of months. But why is that fight so hard? Why do I NEED to go shopping? I have tons of nice clothes, shoes, and accessories right now. Well, maybe it’s not a need, but more of a challenge.
I love getting a great deal. It’s such a rush to find that high quality, super expensive item for mere pennies on the dollar. For us serious bargain shoppers, we never forget those really great deals we find buried among the rest. Back in 2005, I found a very cute pair of black and white Pumas in DSW for $18. The funny thing was, it wasn’t on the clearance rack in the back, instead it was on the sales floor next to regular-priced items. In 2001, just before winter while living in Chicago, I found a cream-colored cashmere trench coat on clearance for $40 in TJ Maxx. Last year, while interviewing for jobs, I happened across a brown Nine West skirt suit for $39.99 on SmartBargains.com (with free shipping, no less!). And more recently, I bought a pair of electric blue, patent leather Christian Louboutin’s at a semi-annual consignment sale for $60! What was the common denominator of all of these great finds? I was at the right place at the right time, not looking for anything specific.Haven’t you ever noticed that when you are shopping on a mission, you never find what you’re looking for? I really don’t know why that is, but that’s exactly how it happens. Unfortunately, due to the current financial state of my household, these great treasure hunts have come to an end…temporarily. Gone are the days of driving two minutes away to the Clothes Mentor to peruse rack after rack of fabulous finds. Although my size is scarce, I always find something. I once bought a blue, leather Kenneth Cole purse (like new) for $15! Oh, how I miss that store. It taunts me every time I drive past it. That’s the problem with having a favorite store close to home, you always feel that pull to go in the direction of its parking lot. I would go insane if TJ Maxx and DSW were that close. I don’t think I would be able to resist all of them at once!
How could I forget those great department store discoveries? The Kohl’s and JC Penney clearance racks are like gold mines on the right day with the convenient 15-30% off coupons you get in the mail every other day. Last summer I bought my 3 year old those cute, footed Carter’s pajamas for 99¢ at JC Penney! I ended up with at least 10 for the upcoming winter season. At Dillard’s, during a clearance sale, I discovered my, now, signature business wear brand- Antonio Melani. Their business wear is exactly my style and fits so well! I’ve got to get on the “call me if there is a sale” list. Oh yeah, that’s right, no more sales for me. Well, the next time you all visit any of these stores, visit the clearance rack one time for me!
What are some of the best deals you’ve found?
