  • If you’re willing to sacrifice some of the convenience of a lighter, cordless vacuum for a thorough cleaning that you’d experience from a professional service, then a trusted brand like Hoover may have the right product for you. The WindTunnel 3 gets its name from the three channels of suction it creates to lift and remove dirt and debris on your floor’s surface, as well as deep down embedded dirt. The brush roll can be turned on or off with a foot pedal to move between multiple surfaces on the go. Not only does this unit include an easy rinse HEPA filter, but it also has an odor-absorbing carbon layer that can help rid your home of those unflattering smells your pets can leave behind.

The Pet Tool Pack takes your suction power from the floor to your upholstery, stairs, and furniture--basically anywhere that’s in the vicinity of pet hair can be cleaned. A telescopic wand can extend the reach of your wand to reach high spaces and crevices where pet hair and dust can easily gather and be neglected. The 27’ cord length is the longest of any power cord on this list and when you add that to the 10’ hose, it shouldn’t be hard to make it from outlet to the targeted area.

If you have dogs or cats in your house, you're probably familiar with the problem of cleaning up pet hair. Certain cat and dog breeds tend to shed more than others. And while some breeds primarily shed in the spring and fall, others shed hair all the time. In any case, pet hair is another thing that you'll have to deal with when cleaning your house—and there are vacuums with special brushes and suction just for that purpose. In fact, if too much pet hair gets tangled in the vacuum’s rollers, it could damage your vacuum.

But pet hair isn't the only nuisance. There is also dander, which is now known to be more of an irritant to allergy sufferers than pet hair itself. (Dander should not be confused with dandruff—dandruff is visible flakes of dry skin that you can see with the naked eye, whereas dander is microscopic particles of dry skin.) Dander particles can be as small as 25 microns in length—and it ends up providing food for another allergy nuisance, the house dust mite, making allergy problems even worse. So it's important to vacuum it up and not leave it lying around your house.

There are vacuums that are specially made for removing pet hair and dander. If you want to make a wise choice as to the best vacuum for your pet hair needs, it's worth getting familiar with some of the most popular models of pet hair vacuums. You'll see that these vacuums have features for dealing with pet hair. Some will have motorized attachments, so as not to get clogged due to pet hair. Others are able to clean the brush as they pick up hair. And they'll have HEPA (= High-Efficiencyiculate Air)  filters, that are approved for picking up any pollutants larger than 0.3 microns in size. You'll also have to consider how many pets you have and your vacuuming needs before making a choice. You may want to investigate cordless vacuum cleaners, which allow you the freedom of not requiring having an electrical outlet nearby.

Considerations When Buying a Vacuum Cleaner for Pet Hair

  • Being able to reach underneath furniture: Since pet hair will tend to clump up under furniture, you should prefer a vacuum which an appropriate reach. Uprights and canisters will be preferable here to the handheld models--uprights and canister vacuums will have the hose and wand to give you significant reach under beds and couches. (A handheld will only go as far as arm’s length.)

  • Handheld vacuums: There are handheld devices, like the FURminator de-shedding tools, or the ShedPal, which comb your pet dog or cat, while the vacuum sucks up the hair. Instead of using a bristle brush or comb to free up the shedding hair, these devices consist of rubber massaging knobs that rotate and release the loose pet hair, while the vacuum sucks up the hair into the canister. Devices like these can also have a fabric head attachment for furniture, clothes, and car seats. Then there is the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum (Model 33A1), with a special toothed rubber head which dislodges pet hair from furniture or bedding, as the vacuum sucks it up.

  • Pet hair attachments: You’ll notice that vacuums that are specifically for pet hair have particular attachments that you employ when you encounter clumps of pet hair. Here are a few of them:

    • Stiff-brush attachment: This will roll the clumps of pet hair into a ball, making it easier for the vacuum to pick it up later. Some attachments are motorized heads, which take power from the vacuum to move a rubber roller. This rubber roller beats on the carpet, releasing any pet hair or other debris. The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional (Cat. No. NV370) has a motorized power brush that generates static electricity to cause pet hair to clump up. The vacuum can thus do a better job in removing these furballs.

    • Soft brush attachment: Vacuums are also equipped with a soft brush attachment for picking up pet hair from flat, smooth surfaces. That is suitable for hardwood floors and baseboards.

    • Self-cleaning brush roll: There are brush rolls on pet hair vacuums that cut the hair that accumulates. Without such a feature, the hair would keep the brush roll from rotating, compromising its performance, and severely reducing the vacuum’s suction.  The Electrolux UltraFlex Canister Vacuum is equipped with such a self-cleaning button.

    • Crevice tool: The long, pointed tube attachment is designed to remove debris from between cushions on a couch, or along edges. Pet hair and other debris can accumulate there, so it’s best to have a means of removing it.

What People are Saying

  • Using the vacuum on carpeted stairs: If you have stairs with carpeting, take note of which models are going to work the best. The Electrolux EL4335A Corded Ultra Flex Canister Vacuum was considered the proper weight and size to maneuver properly when doing stairs. If you insist on getting an upright vacuum cleaner, you should get a model with a suction nozzle to vacuum stairs, such as the Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away (Model NV501). It converts into the equivalent of a hand-held unit with the press of a button.

  • Adjusts to different heights: If you have wall-to-wall carpeting in your home, you don’t need your vacuum to adjust to different heights. But, if different types of rugs, such as plush carpets and low pile rugs, you should opt for a vacuum that has a means of adjusting to the different carpet heights. This is especially true if you want to vacuum hardwood floors or linoleum as well.

Useful Tips for Shoppers

  • HEPA vacuums and HEPA filters: There are bagged HEPA vacuums, and bagless vacuums equipped with HEPA filters. A HEPA bagged vacuum will have a cloth or disposable paper bag that traps all impurities that are larger than the HEPA limit of 0.3 microns. A HEPA filter that is inserted in a bagless vacuum will usually be made from fiberglass arranged in a paper-like pleated form, to increase the filter’s surface area. It will also be enriched with activated carbon, which gives the filter the ability to absorb and neutralize odors. A HEPA vacuum is certified to remove 99.97% of all impurities from the air that are larger than 0.3 microns (= that means 3 1/10000ths of a millimeter) in size or larger. For comparison, human hair will range from 30-100 microns in thickness, while pet dander will range from 0.05-25 microns in thickness--so a HEPA filter will definitely stop hair, but may not stop all pet dander. The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Vacuum doesn’t employ filters, but rather has a fine mesh screen that allows the whole vacuum to function as a HEPA vacuum.

  • Bagged vacuums are more risk-free: Since you don’t want to release pet hair back into the room, some pet owners prefer bagged vacuums, which allow you to remove the vacuum bag and dispose of it, without risk of any of the pet hair getting out. Bagless vacuums that use a dirt cup will run the risk of re-releasing all that dander and pet hair back in the environment--which you clearly want to avoid. So even though you save money with a bagless vacuum, and it is more convenient, you may encounter more pet hair and dander when emptying it out.

  • Washable filters: Some HEPA filters, such as in the Dyson DC40 Vacuum, are washable, while some shouldn’t be washed since the washing will damage the filter’s ability to remove debris. Also, the frequency at which you change the vacuum’s filters will be dependent on how often you vacuum and how much debris you encounter. In fact, it’s best to clean or replace filters often. A clogged filter will cause the entire vacuum to overheat, and the vacuum will perform significantly less well.

  • Choose a vacuum with a beater bar: If you have to remove pet hair and dander from a carpet, you should prefer a vacuum with a beater bar. The beater bar rotates over 6000 revolutions per minute, simultaneously beating and combing your carpet, liberating the ground-in debris. This is exactly what you need to remove pet hair and the other debris that they leave behind--the vacuum's suction will not be enough to get your carpet clean.

  • When not to use the hose attachments: If you have just brushed your pet and it has shed a lot of hair, it is best to use the hose without any attachments, so as to prevent the roller from getting clogged or tangled. Use the motorized rollers and brushes on upholstery and carpeting when you see that the hair has become embedded.
