A Guide to the Best Jogging Strollers

By Yehudah Posnick

Baby strollers come in a variety of designs nowadays. There are full-size strollers, which gives you storage compartments for diapers, your phone and keys, drinks, and more. There are also lightweight strollers and frame strollers, with an emphasis on being as compact and light as possible. Then there are jogging strollers, for parents who want to maintain a fitness routine, while taking the baby outside for some fresh air. The frame and tires of a jogging stroller are built for rugged conditions, to allow going on rough terrain and at higher speeds. They will be suitable for both trails as well as going on a sidewalk. But they’ll also be able to secure your child in place, so that the baby or toddler won’t get jostled around. You’ll see a wide range of jogging strollers, also called “joggers”--and choosing the right one will ensure that both you and your child will be able to enjoy exercise time together.

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a jogging stroller. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of jogging stroller,

  • See useful tips about that particular type of jogging stroller,

  • Read reviews of different jogging strollers, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of jogging stroller, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types of Jogging Strollers

  • Fixed wheel: This is recommended for joggers who run for long distances on straight paths, who don’t need a lot of maneuverability. The fixed wheel will offer greater stability, without jiggling to the sides. Note: Larger wheels, both in the front and in the rear, usually will indicate that the jogger will allow for faster speeds. For example, the Thule Glide 2 has a fixed 16”-diameter front wheel, and 18”-diameter rear wheels, to be more suitable for running and fast jogging in straight lines.

  • Swivel wheel: The swivel wheel will allow a jogging stroller to function as a regular stroller. That gives you greater maneuverability when shopping or going on a leisurely walk with your child. But, even if you lock a front swivel wheel in place, it won’t have the stability of a fixed wheel. You’ll probably have to use both hands to maintain good control over the stroller. The Chicco Activ3 Jogging Stroller features such a swivel wheel in the front.

What Reviewers Say

  • Make sure the child is secure inside: Many joggers have a 5-point safety harness inside--much like a race-car driver!--to ensure that the child doesn’t get any bumps when you’re jogging. Also, many will have a padded reclining seat, that can be placed at a number of angles. Your child can either sit or recline while you jog.

However, note that joggers are not intended for babies less than 6 months old. For the first three months of life, in particular, a baby’s neck is not strong enough to support their head--so it’s not safe to put them in a jogger.

  • Tether strap: Many joggers, such as the Costzon Baby Jogger Stroller, have a tether strap that you wrap around your wrist, to make sure that the jogger doesn’t get away from you.

  • Shock-absorbing design: Many joggers will have rubber wheels, that are made to withstand a rocky trail. However, some, such as the BOB Revolution Jogging Stroller, will have inflatable wheels and a mountain-bike type suspension, to ensure that the baby’s ride will be smooth. The Schwinn Interval Jogging Stroller also sports polished wheel ball bearings, to reduce resistance and produce a smoother ride.

Important Features

  • Quick release trigger fold: Many jogger strollers are collapsible, and can be folded by means of a single latch on the handle. The Baby Trend Range Jogger has such a folding handle. Also, there are jogging strollers that have an adjustable handle, that allows you several pushing angles for greater comfort. An example is the Schwinn Interval Jogging Stroller.

  • UV Protection: Some joggers have a canopy that doesn’t just protect your baby from wind and rain. There are even canopies that are UV resistant, protecting your baby from needless exposure to the sun! The BOB Revolution Flex Jogging Stroller has a UPF (=Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ canopy, to make sure your child won’t get a sunburn when outside. Also, some will have a window in the sun canopy, so that you can get a glimpse to see if your child is sleeping.

  • Cup holders and basket: You can find joggers that have a tray for the child, AND a tray for you! Each tray will be fitted with two cup holders--so that you can ensure that you have a drink, as well as your baby. There are also strollers with baskets underneath the child, to store away diapers, towelettes, and more. The Costzon Baby Jogger Stroller has such cup holders and a basket, for your convenience.
