A Guide to the Best Garage Door Openers

By Yehuda Posnick

A garage can be a lot more than just a place to park your car. It can also be used as a storage space or another access point to your home. It’s estimated that 70% of people enter their home via the garage. That means that you’ll have to secure the entrance to the garage, just like to the rest of your house. Remote control garage door openers used to work just on a radio signal. But nowadays there are systems that will allow you to open your garage door with an encrypted, rolling code that changes every time that you use the device. That will protect your garage from any intruders entering. And you also have options of several devices to open your garage door--some from a distance as great as 1500 feet! There are also garage door openers that come with safety features, like an electric eye, so that the garage door won’t close on someone or something, such as people, pets, or objects.

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a garage door opener. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of garage door opener,

  • See useful tips about that particular type of garage door opener,

  • Read reviews of different garage door openers, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of garage door opener, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types of Garage Door Openers

When you buy a garage door opener, you typically receive a motor, a belt, chain, or screw drive, as well as safety sensors. There will usually be a variety of means of controlling the operation of the door opener: a wall control, a wireless keypad control, and remote controls.

  • Belt Drive Openers--This employs a Kevlar polymer belt with teeth on one side. The belt rotates on a gear, getting caught by the gear’s teeth while pulling the trolley and lifting the door. Because of its quiet operation, these are best if your garage is attached to your house. It’s so quiet, in fact, it’s suitable even if your bedroom is situated right on top of the garage! An example is the Chamberlain B550 Smartphone-Controlled Ultra-Quiet and Strong Belt Drive Garage Door Opener.

  • Chain Drive Openers--This is the oldest design and the most common type of garage opener, using a chain much like what you would see on a bicycle. The chain moves a trolley, that moves the garage door up or down. They are significantly noisier than the belt drive garage openers. An example of a chain drive door opener is the Craftsman ½-HP Chain Drive Garage Door Opener. They are good for detached garages so that the noise will not disturb you as much. They are cheaper than the belt drive design and will save money.

  • Screw Drive Openers--This uses a threaded shaft that rotates to move the trolley. It has to be oiled periodically and actually wears down the trolley more quickly. It is noisier than the belt drive, but not as noisy as the chain drive. Some technicians say that it is less reliable.

What Reviewers Say

  • Safety reversal system:  The Liftmaster garage door opener has a programmable motor, so that you can set the correct open and closed limits for the door. You erase the previous settings, and then activate it for new settings. It also has a safety reversal system, so that the door will reverse direction when it hits an object that is 1.5” or higher from the floor. If this is not properly set, it can cause serious injury to children or pets.

  • Can use one remote for several garage door openers: Both Liftmaster and Chamberlain garage door openers use a remote control with three buttons. It lets you control up to 3 different garage doors.

Important Features

  • Security measures: There are keyless garage door openers that employ “rolling code”, where the entry code changes every time you use the remote control to open the garage door. The Chamberlain  C410 opener uses Security+ 2.0 code encryption, which protects against someone hacking into the garage opener code. There are also compatible garage door opener keypads that take a 4-number code to open the door. You can store the 4-digit PIN manually into your garage door opener.

  • Range: With Smartphone apps and remote controls, Chamberlain offers you ways of operating your garage door from a distance of 1500 feet!

  • Smartphone alerts: Chamberlain garage door openers don’t just allow you to open the door with your mobile device. You can also use the Chamberlain MyQ app, which sends you a smartphone alert when the garage door opens or closes. You can also use the app to schedule the garage’s lighting as well.

  • Know the height of your garage door: There are garage door openers that are designed for a garage door that is 7 feet high. If you have a higher garage door, you will have to purchase an extension kit to allow it to control an 8- or 10-foot garage door.

  • Battery backup: Liftmaster and Chamberlain make a battery backup unit to open your garage door in the event of a problem with the mains power. People find it convenient if their only entry to the garage is via the main garage door.
