Your Guide To Buying Portable Bluetooth Speakers

By Yehudah Posnick

Bluetooth speakers can offer you terrific sound, amplifying music from your phone or other mobile device. You simply have to set the speakers to “discoverable”, and you can broadcast content from your phone, tablet or laptop over the Bluetooth speaker. You’ll see a wide range of speakers, in terms of their size, weight, and how powerful they are. Since portable Bluetooth speakers are meant to go places with you, you’ll want speakers that can withstand the elements, being waterproof or at least water-resistant. And since Bluetooth speakers depend on battery power, you’ll want a device that charges up fast, and gives you performance for a long time.

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a portable Bluetooth speaker. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of portable Bluetooth speaker,

  • See useful tips about that particular type of portable Bluetooth speaker,

  • Read reviews of different portable Bluetooth speakers, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of portable Bluetooth speaker, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types of Bluetooth Portable Speakers

  • Water-resistant Bluetooth Speakers: Bluetooth speakers that are intended to be portable, or that are for outdoor use, will probably need to be water resistant, at the very least. This means that they can withstand splashes of water, or even a light rain.

  • Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers: You’ll see Bluetooth speakers that are not just water-resistant against splashes of water, but can actually even be submerged in water! For example, the Ultimate Ears Boom 2 can be in water that is 1 meter deep for as long as 30 minutes!

  • Take note of the waterproof rating: You’ll see the IPX rating system, telling you how waterproof your speakers are. “IP” stands for “Ingress Protection”, and it indicates how resistant the device is against penetration of dust and moisture. The first number is the dust resistance (here, it is substituted with the letter “X”, when the device’s dust resistance is not significant), and the second number tells you the water resistance. Water resistance means the device can withstand splashes of water.

    • “IPX6” is the highest level of water resistance, and it means that the device is protected from powerful water jets. But you can't submerge the device in water.

    • “IPX7” means that the device can be submerged in water of a depth of up to 1 meter. The JBL Clip 2 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker has an IPX7 rating, for example.

    • “IPX8” means that the device can be submerged in water deeper than 1 meter for a short period of time.

Other devices will come with a flotation device, so that the speaker will immediately float to the top if it falls in a pool.

What Reviewers Say

  • Other music input options: Many speakers will include an FM radio in the device if you want that instead of using the Bluetooth feature. Some, such as the Pyle Wireless Bluetooth Speaker, also have ports for a micro-SD card or even a USB flash memory.

  • Controls that are easy to use: Opt for Bluetooth speakers with easy-to-master controls. The Sbode has intuitive controls to let you toggle between Bluetooth mode or phone mode, play/pause, volume control, and TWS (=True Wireless Stereo, where you can use two Sbode devices in tandem for stereo effects).

Important Features

  • Omnidirectional sound: One feature of many Bluetooth speakers is projecting sound in all directions. This is a definite upgrade from speakers that can project sound in only one direction. The Sbode Bluetooth Speakers achieve this by having 4 speakers, including 2 bass speakers at both sides. Also, take note if the Bluetooth speakers have separate bass and treble speakers.

  • Range: Bluetooth speakers will differ in their range: how far can the speakers be located from the source of the music. The Ultimate Ears Boom 2 has a range of 100 feet. The Pyle Bluetooth Speakers have less of a range, of only 30 feet.

  • Recharge time and battery life: Many Bluetooth speakers will come with a USB to mini-USB cable for recharging. Some will also have a wall charger as well. But you certainly don’t want to have to recharge your speakers all the time. The JBL Clip 2 gives 8 hours of playing time without having to recharge. On the other hand, the DOSS Wireless Bluetooth Portable Speaker will give you 12 hours of playing time, and require only 3-4 hours of recharging.

  • Compatibility: You would like your Bluetooth speakers to be able to stream music from a number of devices. The Aomais Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speakers are compatible with iPhones, iPads, iPods, HTC and Samsung phones, tablets, laptops, PCs, and more.

  • Weight and portability: The weight and size of the speakers will determine how portable they really are. The Doss Bluetooth Speakers are just 1.23 pounds in weight, and, at 6.6” x 2.9” x 2.7”, can easily fit in a knapsack.

  • Power of the speakers: The wattage of the speakers will tell you how powerful they can emit sound. The Pyle Portable Bluetooth Speaker has a surprising 200-Watt maximum power output.
