A Guide to Air Purifiers

By Yehudah Posnick

If you or someone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma, you are probably familiar with the discomfort that comes in the spring, or in the late summer, when the pollen counts tend to be higher. If you’re a pet owner, hair from your pet shedding, as well as pet dander (microscopic particles of dry skin that flake off from your dog or cat) are other causes of concern for allergy sufferers. And there are all sorts of pollutants that you would prefer not to breathe in, as well as dust, molds, and spores. An air purifier is a convenient and inexpensive device that can remove pollutants remarkably efficiently--down to as small as 3 micrometers!

Besides the actual filtering and purifying, you’ll see that some air purifiers have features to disinfect as well, using ultraviolet light to eliminate bacteria and viruses. Instead of spending money on cold or allergy medicine, wouldn’t it be more effective to eliminate the causes of colds and allergies from your home? So investing in a good air purifier is a logical choice.

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting an air purifier. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of air purifier,

  • See useful tips about that particular type of air purifier,

  • Read reviews of different air purifiers, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of air purifier, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types of Air Purifiers

  • 3-in-1 devices: You’ll see air purifiers that are 3-in-1 devices, meaning that they offer three stages of air purification. These include:

    • A pre-filter, which removes the larger pollutants--pet dander, pollen grains, dust particles. This protects the sensitive HEPA filter, to lighten its workload.

    • An activated carbon filter, which absorbs gases, odors, and VOCs (= volatile organic compounds). This is recommended for asthma sufferers, since the carbon filter will remove chemical irritants.

    • A HEPA filter, which removes 99.97% of all pollutants larger than 3 micrometers in size. This is especially important for allergy sufferers, who are interested in removing pollen from the air.

  • 4-in-1 devices: There are also 4-in-1 devices, which add a fourth purification stage, such as the Germ Guardian 4-in-1 Air Cleaning System. The fourth stage will be a UV-C light. This is an ultraviolet lamp which produces light at such a frequency that it kills many bacteria, fungi, and even viruses.

What Reviewers Say

  • Remote controls: Some air purifiers will have WiFi or remote controls. That will let you operate the air purifier even when you’re not necessarily at home.

  • Detect fresher air: Even though some customers still notice dust particles in the air, despite using the air purifier, they do notice a certain freshness in the air after running it for a few hours. So they definitely contribute to removing odors.

Important Features

  • Filter replacement: You’ll be required to replace the air purifier’s filter every 6-12 months, depending on how hard your device has to work. Some purifiers, such as the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier, has a filter replacement indicator that goes on when the filter is no longer working efficiently. (The VAVA air purifier has an LED indicator light that goes on, telling you to change the filter.) The Winix air purifier also has a smart sensor that monitors the air quality. That will help it determine when the filter has to be replaced.

  • Noise factor: Since you will be running the air purifier at all different hours of the day, even at night, you certainly don’t want it to be so noisy that it disturbs your sleep. The VAVA Air Purifier has three fan settings: low, medium, and high. The low, or sleep mode, setting operates at 30 decibels--as loud as a person whispering. The medium setting operates 40 decibels, comparable to a rain shower. The high setting is at 50 decibels--approximately the same noise level as a refrigerator’s motor.

  • Clean Air Delivery Rate: You’ll see air purifiers with a CADR rating. This is a figure that tells how many cubic feet of air is purified by the device every minute. The Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier is CADR rated for a 360- square-foot room. You want to consider your room size when choosing an air purifier.

  • Sleep mode: Besides the quiet operation when you set the fan on its “Low” setting, there also is a “sleep” mode, which turns off the air purifier’s indicator lights. This ensures that the purifier will not disturb you.

  • Automatic Shutoff: Many air purifiers have an automatic shutoff feature. It will turn off the device at a preset time--after either 2, 4, or 8 hours of operation. This saves energy, and ensures that the device works only when you want, so that you don't overwork the air filter.
