Look Coordinated, Not Silly

Family vacations are a great way for the entire brood to bond. One way families can do this is by wearing matching outfits to display their unity. The downfall is that coordinated fashion can risk looking cheesy and silly. Here are some classic looks that can make the whole family look like A-list style icons (including dad and the boys!).

Fashionable family on beach

The fashionable family is going to stay classic and comfortable for the flight to their vacation destination. Keep it simple by wearing jeans paired with a white shirt or blouse. For the guys, this is pretty basic, but the girls can have a bit more fun with the look, while staying in the same theme. For jeans, mom and daughter can try a low rise flare style, like these from Gap 1969 Modern Trouser Jeans ($70, gap.com) for mom and these Gap Skinny Flare Jeans ($35, gap.com) for the little lady. On top, if you want to have a bit more flair than the basic button down shirt, try a peasant style like this Gap Crochet Peasant Top ($55, gap.com) for mom and this Crochet flutter sleeve tank for girls ($20, gap.com).

Beach bagAt the beach

For a chic family day at the beach, color coordinate your bathing suits in similar colors and prints. Dad and Mom can have fun with matching bathing suits in a playful print like this octopus print capri trunk from Lilly Pulitzer ($68, lillypulitzer.com) and the women's Cinch 1 piece printed bathing suit ($128, lillypulitzer.com). Boys can try trunks like these short swim trunks in Aqua-octopus from Mini-Boden ($15, bodenusa.com). Since little girls may not want to wear the squiggly sea-creatures, try a different print with a similar navy color scheme, like this Sandy One Shoulder One Piece bathing suit ($68, lillypulitzer.com) which sports cute anchors instead.

binocularSightseeing

For days spent sightseeing, learning and exploring, the family can't go wrong with chambray. Father and son can pair a short sleeve chambray shirt with khaki or tan cargo shorts. Mom and daughter can wear a more feminine but still functional look with chambray dresses. Try this Women's Pintucked Prairie Dress ($30, oldnavy.com) for Mom and this Girls' Smocked Chambray Sundress ($20, oldnavy.com) for the daughter.

Fork, knife, spoonOut to dinner

For a stylish family dinner, the family can look color coordinated in gray, white and black tones (which can be worn at casual or elegant locations). Dad and son can try light weight pants with a hip button down surfer shirt, like the Quiksilver Sea Legs Short Sleeve Shirt ($50, quiksilver.com) in black for Dad and the Quiksilver Soul Brother Shirt ($38, quiksilver.com) in black. Mom and daughter can look gorgeous in maxi dresses in similar colors. Mom can try the Roxy World Festival 2 Dress ($70, roxy.com) while the family princess can wear the Roxy Girls High Tide Dress ($31, roxy.com).

I do like the idea of coordinating blacks and grey's for dinner though. Sometimes when on vacation you forget to pack a good looking outfit for a nice dinner...especially m kids! But this would give them easy guidelines to follow so we can all look presentable at dinner.

This would be a sure fire way to get great pics out of the vacation though!

Interesting article! I had never thought of coordinating my families outfits for a vacation. Seems like a lot of work. I do love all of the links to clothes though, that Lilly Pulitzer swim suit is super cute!

I think this is a little bit silly in my opinion. Looking coordinated doesn't necessarily mean bonding time. Also, I usually just reserve coordinating outfits for family portraits.
