Stay fit on vacation

There's nothing better than summer vacation – unless you end up crying on the scale when you get home. Staying fit on vacation is a lot easier (and more fun) if you pick a destination where you'll enjoy new fitness activities you typically don't experience at home. Here, we share our top fitness-friendly destinations, along with expert tips from Laura Williams, Founder and CEO of Girls Gone Sporty.

San Diego, CA

Expert Tip: Bring healthy snacks
Laura Williams, Founder and CEO of the fitness website Girls Gone Sporty, suggests bringing healthy and transportable snacks on the plane, such as apples and oranges, peanut butter sandwiches, baggies of trail mix, and carrots, celery and sliced cucumber.

With a year-round temperature of 70-80 degrees, San Diego is a favorite destination of Laura Williams, Founder and CEO of Girls Gone Sporty. The beaches are perfect for everything from sand volleyball and body boarding to surfing and cycling. "Whether you're walking the San Diego Zoo or the museums of Balboa Park, taking ocean kayaking tours or playing golf," says Williams, "it's hard not to stay active when you're vacationing in San Diego!”

Vail, CO

Vail is known for its skiing, but Williams loves to enjoy the outdoors at popular ski resorts in summertime, too. Hit the mountain bike trails on Vail and Beaver Creek mountains. Enjoy a brisk hike or visit one of the swimming pools with the family for a day of swimming, splashing and sliding.

Portland, OR

Expert Tip: Pack the right gear
First and foremost: Bring workout-appropriate shoes! Williams suggests packing a good pair of cross-trainers or a lightweight pair of trail-running shoes, at least one set of weather-appropriate workout clothes and a bathing suit.

Portland's abundant hiking trails, cycling paths and parks make this city a great spot for the outdoor enthusiast. If you like to run, try the Waterfront Park Loop over the city's bridges or head off-road to Forest Park's 70 miles of trails. Hit one of Portland's many farmer's markets for fresh, healthy eats while you're there.

Maui, HI

If you don't mind an early wake-up, the Haleakala Sunrise is an experience you won't want to miss. Sign up with a local tour company that will pick you up and drive you up Haleakala Crater Road where you'll watch the glorious sunrise. Then hop on a bicycle and cycle down the high-speed winding road with amazing views along the way.

Belize

Expert Tip: Make a workout calendar
Williams recommends writing down fitness activities on a calendar (not just a smartphone!) and displaying the calendar prominently in the hotel room. It's easier to follow through with your plans when you can't ignore them!

If you're looking for adventure, head to Belize. Hike inland through dense rainforests, zipline through jungle canopies or kayak down serene rivers. Hit the coast for activities including scuba diving and snorkeling with beautiful tropical fish. Ever tried windsurfing, kiteboarding or parasailing? If not, here's your chance!

You won't even realize you're exercising as you drink in the surroundings while hiking along the Italian coast visiting each of the five towns that comprise Cinque Terra, Italy. Go ahead and enjoy a mouth-watering pizza along the way. You will have certainly burned enough calories to indulge!
