Spice up your staples and tap into some new style ideas with the following ways to get re-energized about fashion.
The first place you should look when you’re feeling sartorially challenged is to your most style-savvy pals. What are they wearing? Where are they shopping? What looks are they currently coveting? Answering these questions should point you in the right direction when it comes to what to add to your own closet. When in doubt, go to the source. Invite yourself over, bring a bottle of pinot and head straight for the closet to see what’s there. Take notes, ask questions and if you’re lucky, borrow a few sweet styles.
Devote your next free Sunday afternoon to curling up with a pile of your favorite fashion magazines. Brew some tea and sip as you flip the glossy pages in search of style inspiration. Keep some mini post-its handy so you can earmark the pages you want to go back to. You might not be able to afford most of the items on offer, but that’s not the point. The purpose of this exercise is to get your style juices flowing.
A well-curated vintage store stocks items that are on-trend (often even ahead of the trends) and can be a great place to look for style inspiration. Much of what is stocked in smaller, more boutique vintage stores is inspired by what’s on the runways season to season. Spend a day browsing two or three and ideally, you’ll come away with some new ideas about the look you want to cultivate. If you can find a few gems in your budget – even better!
If you’re really struggling and your wardrobe is in dire need of an overhaul (such as when you’re starting a new job that requires more of a polished look), you can always shell out for a style consultation. A personal stylist will accompany you to the mall and pick out items you likely wouldn’t choose if you’re feeling stuck where style is concerned. They know what will work on your body type and they know the trends.
We can’t get enough of Pinterest, a fabulous place to go for fashion inspiration – and trust us when we tell you it’s possible to lose hours on the virtual pin board. If you don’t have an account, you can just browse (search fashion or style to get on the right track) but creating an account is simple. Add your email address to request an invite. It usually takes under 24 hours to be granted one. Then you can share your online loves – from tempting recipes to coveted clothes – with the rest of the web. But let’s get back to fashion. A simple search for "dresses" nets a wide variety of pieces worth a second (or third) glance. You’re guaranteed to be inspired.
What better place to look for style inspiration than to your favorite celebrities? Whether you’re online or off, it’s pretty much impossible not to be inundated with famous faces. Since celebs have access to all the latest designs and pretty much set the trends in many cases, they make a great jumping off point when you’re feeling out of sorts when it comes to style. Whether it’s Reese Witherspoon’s baby bump style, Scarlett Johansson’s cool elegance, Nicole Richie’s boho-chic style or Angelina Jolie’s sleek simplicity, there’s bound to be something that catches your eye.
