MommyStyle: 5 Ways to wear a basic black cardigan

I started in 2008. Since then I've become an author, style host, TV correspondent, spokesperson and full-time digital influencer.

Bring out the fashion essentials

Fashion essentials are items that every mom should have in her closet. They're the kinds of items that you can dress up, dress down and do everything in between. Here's how to rock a black cardigan.

If you took a look in my closet, you'd see a sea of colors, patterns and fabrics. Every season I love to bring in the latest style trends and really have some fun with fashion. It's the fashionista in me -- what can I say!

I'm also a practical fashionista, though. I know it's important for moms to have basic pieces in their closets that can stretch a long way. A successful clothing item to me is something that I can wear a multiple amount of ways. It's an item that can dress up, dress down and do everything in between. It's these kinds of items that I like to call -- essentials.

What kinds of items are essentials?

For starters, a basic black cardigan has always topped my list.

I love that a black cardigan can work for any woman -- regardless of her shape, her size or her age. I love that it can be paired with just about anything, and still look fabulous. I love that they are available in so many different price points. And I love that a black cardigan is offered in so many different fabrics (cashmere is my all-time fave!).

I want to show you how you can take a basic black cardigan (or "cardi" as I like to call it) and quite literally make it work five different ways. I purposely wanted to show five distinct different looks just to stress how much fashion versatility you can get out of it!

Casually chic

Take a pair of your favorite colored jeans (mine are green right now!), a striped tee, a chunky necklace and thongs to perfect this look with your black cardigan. I love that this look is very casual, but it's also very trendy. The black cardigan adds a sense of sophistication to the look!

Spring sundress season

There's nothing I love more about the spring than finally being able to take out my favorite spring sundresses. Only problem is, it's not that warm yet, so I always need to add an extra layer. In my fashion opinion, the black cardigan is the perfect go-to add-on for any spring sundress for a special occasion.

This is the easiest look for any woman! Bring on your favorite blacks -- capris, trousers, sweaters, blouses, tees, etc. and just toss on your cardigan, too. I love how classic and timeless this look is; it's perfect for work or play! I especially love adding a bold shoe with this monochromatic look; it's perfect for the spring!

Work chic

So many moms want to know what they can wear to work and look professional, yet still chic. I love a pencil skirt and heels, and I think they are fabulous work staples. I wanted to show here how you could take your pencil skirt and heels, add a bold blouse and layer with a black cardigan, not a blazer! I also love to pair with my favorite bold accessories -- bangles and cuffs and coin necklaces. I think it's super easy and such a gorgeous look!

I'm all about having fun, but it can't always be about work. This look is all about relaxing with a pair of boyfriend jeans, white tank, scarf and espadrilles and adding the classic black cardigan. It's an easy look and I especially love it for moms on the weekend.
