As a general rule, darker skin tones look best with a brighter shade of pink, and lighter skin tones do better with a rosier, subtle shade. That doesn't mean you can't possibly pull off that super bright tube of candy pink with a pale skin tone. Just look at Katy Perry! The rule is to find a shade that enhances your natural color. When you exercise, take a look at your post-workout lips. They'll be pretty and pink. Try to match that shade with your lipstick.
Using a lip balm before applying your lip color will ensure you get the smoothest, softest canvas to work with. Something as simple as petroleum jelly will work for this step. Go easy, as you still want your lip color to stick.
Old school makeup techniques will tell you that it's best to line your lips with a shade that's one or two times darker than your lip color of choice, but don't! Try your hardest to match your liner to your natural lip color. Start from the center bow of the lip and drag the pencil in short, feathery lines, lining just outside your entire pout. To make sure your lip color sticks, you can even take the pencil through the center of the lip for extra bright pink pizzazz.
If your lip color is new and still has a fine point at the end, applying it directly onto your lips is fine. If not, using a lipstick brush will make sure you get color in all the edges and creases without going outside the lip. Start from the center and work your way out. Go light at first, and add color as needed.
Take a piece of toilet tissue and place it between your lips. Press down. Now your lip color will have lasting impact.
For your final step, you want to make your lips look healthy, full and supple. Lip gloss is the perfect way to do that. In the middle of your pout, dab a bit of pearl or clear gloss and rub your lips together, spreading the gloss from the top lip to the bottom. Reapply as needed.
