Pamper Your Skin

Winter plays havoc on skin both indoors and outdoors. Harsh, cold temperatures outside can cause dry skin to become patchy and scaly. Warm, dry air inside depletes the skin of moisture and causes it to become flaky and dull. Luckily, you can prevent this from happening by taking a few precautions so you can enjoy great-feeling skin head-to-toe all winter long.

winter skin tips

Use gentle cleansers

Wash your skin with gentle cleansers that don't strip the skin of moisture. Choose hydrating bath gels, body washes and facial cleansers that clean and soothe skin while retaining natural moisture. Always moisturize immediately after washing so the pores will absorb moisture and hold it in longer.

Skip hot baths

Soaking in a hot tub may sound delightful on a cold winter day, but it can damage your skin. Hot water pulls moisture out of skin and causes it to become dry and dull. Instead, take warm showers using a moisturizing shower gel, and always moisturize with a rich, creamy lotion afterwards. For stubborn, dry skin, try using a lotion that contains cocoa butter for deep moisturizing.

Humidify the air

Heating your home can cause your skin to dry out; adding a cool-mist humidifier will rectify that. An inexpensive humidifier in your bedroom at night will not only help keep your skin feeling good, but will also help you breathe easier. Make sure to fill with fresh water daily, and change the filter often.

Eat foods that replenish the skin

Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids is good for your heart and helps keep your skin healthy from the inside out. Foods such as salmon, tuna, walnuts and flaxseeds help increase the natural oils in your skin and hair. Be sure to drink plenty of water, too; hydrating the body from the inside helps to keep the skin from drying out.

Protect the skin from harsh weather

If you spend a lot of time outside in harsh weather, add a layer of protection to your skin with Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Rubbing exposed areas of skin with a layer of petroleum jelly protects it from damaging cold and wind. Also, always dress properly for winter conditions. Wear layers so you can adjust your body temperature as needed and add scarves and gloves to protect the parts of your body that are usually exposed.
