We chatted with the founder of Yummie, Heather Thomson, to get the scoop on the hottest shapewear brand in town and get you some beauty tips for loving your look. And we took a test drive in a few items from the brand to get you the honest opinion on whether it really works or not. Check it out!
SheKnows: What makes Yummie different from other shapewear brands?
Thomson: We differ completely. All you have to do is close your eyes and touch the products. Other shapewear brands have their purpose and we have ours. We didn't launch onto the scene because we did the same thing; we have our own point of view and they have theirs. Our brand mission is focused on innovation and comfort, and I'm continuously thinking of ways to evolve the brand and better serve our customers.
SheKnows: A lot of women struggle to accept their bodies in our society. What are your top three tips for helping women work with (and learn to love) their shapes?
SheKnows: How did you come up with the name "Yummie?"
Thomson: That's my word. Whether it's a pair of heels or Champagne or a new baby, yummie is my descriptor for all things good. When my first child was in my belly, I called it my yummie tummie. People would touch my stomach and I would say, 'I know, isn't it yummie?' When my son was born and I was complaining to my best friend Pam that my tummie was not so yummie anymore, I put the 3-panel tank I created on and Pam said to me, 'Your tummie is yummie again!' Pam named it -- it's your Yummie Tummie!!
SheKnows: What other fashion tips do you have for readers?
"If you are comfortable and believe in yourself and what you're wearing, then it will show and you will always look great."
Thomson: Spend time understanding your best features and how to work with them and understand what you deem to be your flaws and learn how to work with them. If you are comfortable and believe in yourself and what you're wearing, then it will show and you will always look great. Clothes should enhance you, not make you unsure or comfortable.
I always have my few investment pieces in my closet that will last me a few seasons. That way you can easily build a new wardrobe by reinventing old looks with these new key pieces. Right now, my go-to piece is my Gucci over-the-knee boots, my everyday python print bag from my best friend Pam's Good Charma collection and my favorite denim, Yummie evening wash skinny jeans!
A lot of shapewear brands try to suck you in but in the process, they suck the life -- or breath -- out of you. As I quickly found out, that's not Yummie. I tested two items from the brand and have the scoop on how they fared!
Milan Legging Cotton Collection: I'm a big leggings gal. I love to wear them under long tops, dresses, when lounging around the house, etc. But the bad thing about leggings is that they don't always suck you in around the stomach like jeans do. So I was excited to test out these leggings! I was a bit worried that they'd be too tight or that it'd be an ordeal to shimmy into them (like some leggings can!) but was pleasantly surprised to find that these leggings are both comfy and effective.
The Milan Legging helped smooth out my tummy and create a clean line under clothing, and they were comfy and breathable but helped me feel secure and tucked in -- from my stomach right down to my ankles. These are definitely going to be my go-to leggings now!
Mid Rise Straight Leg Denim: Even though I practically live in dresses and skirts, I love my jeans and I'm always on the hunt for the perfect, comfy pair. I tested out these jeans in the Evening Standard wash and was super impressed with the level of comfort they provided.
These jeans suck you in around the middle and make your thighs look awesome, but they're still soft and comfy. The color is flattering and versatile too -- perfect for day or night!
