5 Menswear-inspired looks to try

Feminine meets masculine

From Michael Kors to Ralph Lauren to Paul Smith, fall runways were awash with menswear-inspired looks. Loose-knit crewneck sweaters, tailored trousers, button-down shirts and masculine takes on everything from blazers to blouses are firmly planted in this fall's fashion spotlight – and with good reason. Putting a mannish twist on womenswear creates a classic, sophisticated look that flatters most sizes, shapes and body types.

1Pinstripe trousers

Pair these perfectly tailored grey pinstripe trousers (Alice & Olivia, $264) with a body-hugging black sweater or a short sleeve button-front blouse and heeled loafers. We love the flattering silhouette – slimmer through the thigh and wider at the cuff – and effortless elegance of this versatile menswear-inspired look.

2Front zip poncho

Forgo the classic cardigan in favor of this long sleeve front zip poncho-style sweater in menswear-inspired plaid (Bloomingdales, $375) and a slouchy silhouette you might associate with something pulled out of your boyfriend's closet. We love the muted plaid, front slant pockets and overall cozy look of this stylish fall must-have.

3Herringbone jacket

No collection of menswear-inspired pieces would be complete without a blazer. We did some serious searching before coming across this fitted style that perfectly embodies the balance between masculine and feminine (J. Crew, $198). The long, lean silhouette with a nipped-in waist is flattering, while the classic cut makes this a multi-purpose fall layer. Choose from several seasonal hues including charcoal, orange, blue and pale green.

4Lace-up brogues

Pound the pavement in style wearing these leather lace-up brogue boots (Asos.com, $87). Not only will they help you brave the urban jungle and comfortably get from the coffee shop to the office, but they allow you to put a masculine twist on whatever you're wearing. Pair with anything from floral frocks and chunky knit tights to slim-fitting trousers and ruffle front blouses.

5Classic shirt

Like blazers, classic button-down dress shirts are a menswear-inspired must. We fell instantly for this one (gargyle.com, $215), featuring slim stripes in white and wine-stained red, a small white collar and a pleat in the back. Add to anything from tailored trousers to a pencil skirt for a masculine take on standard office attire.
