Pretty Little Things: In praise of polka dots

Polka dot power

Just look at something covered in polka dots and try not to smile. I fell in love with polka dots at an early age and have remained committed to this playful pattern into adulthood. No matter what the style spotlight shines on – stripes, checks, leopard print – I can't help but gravitate toward pretty polka dots, especially in the summer. Denim shorts

These high-waisted white shorts with black polka dots (Delia's, $29) will look adorable with a red tank top and black ballet flats, or any bright color on top (I'm thinking pink or yellow) would also work well for a flirty vibe and fun, summery look.

Straw hat

A straw hat is a classic summer accessory and I really like this bowler style option with a wraparound polka dot ribbon (Aldo, $25). This braided straw beauty is perfect for the beach or your next picnic in the park.

Flats

Every shoe collection needs a few pairs of pretty flats and why not one pair with polka dots? Check out these navy flats with small white dots and a cute bow (Shopruche.com, $46), a sweet and stylish addition to your summer staples.

Skirt

I'm a huge fan of dresses and skirts with pockets (it just feels right) so when I saw this one with polka dots, I knew it had to be part of my hot weather wardrobe. The bright blue skirt with tiny white dots (Zara, $20) is simple but chic and makes for an effortless summer outfit. It also comes in pink and black (with white dots).

Barrette

Hold back your luscious locks with this ultra-cute Marc Jacobs black and white polka dot barrette (Zappos Couture, $48). I love the slightly smudged look of the dots and how cute this will look keeping my long hair from getting into my face this summer.

Bikini

This list would not be complete without the requisite itsy bitsy yellow polka dot bikini and I found a fun, flirty style for a great price. Top and bottom are sold separately (Old Navy, $13) – the top is bandeau style with removable halter ties and the matching bikini bottom has a string tie and keyhole detail on the right hip. Too cute!

Halter dress

Turn on the charm -- and turn heads wearing this sexy black and white polka dot halter dress (Top Shop, $100). I love the layered chiffon bodice and flattering V-neck that give this dress a sophisticated but fun look that would be great for a romantic patio date or a casual summer wedding.
