Clashing patterns
Patterns and prints are breaking all the style rules this fall. You'll see polka dots with stripes, tribal prints with houndstooth, and just about every other clashing combination you can imagine.
Long skirts
Long, lean silhouettes are hot for fall, and nothing is more prevalent than floor-grazing skirts. If you don't like the look, consider a skirt that hits at mid-calf instead.
Bright pants
Fashion colors often turn drab come fall, but not this year. Vibrant colors in everything from high-waisted trousers to skinny cigarette pants will brighten up crisp autumn days. Cobalt blue, pretty pinks and everything in between bring a jolt of energy to menswear-inspired pieces.

Capes & ponchos
Ponchos were big last fall, and they'll be back again this year. Look for ponchos in neutral colors with bright accents, such as this fringe-y choice from the Rag & Bone show at Fall 2011 Fashion Week.

Tuxedos
For evening, skip the gown and don a tuxedo. Many designers have created tuxedos and other menswear-inspired pieces for the ladies of fall. When wearing something masculine, add a distinctly feminine piece, such as red peeptoe pumps.
'70s-inspired pantsuits
For the office this fall, you can't go wrong with a pantsuit with '70s flair. This camel suit from DKNY comes alive with a red sweater and a slimming shape.

Anything red
Speaking of red, anything red will be sizzling hot for fall. From red sheath dresses and oversized sweaters to toggle coats and suede pumps, shades of crimson will dominate the cool-weather fashion scene.
Other fall fashions to watch:
