Wrinkles are caused by ultraviolet light, so the #1 anti-aging product for your skin is sunscreen. You should apply it daily to your face, neck, hands and chest to prevent sun spots and wrinkles. Dr David Bank, president of New York State Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, recommends sunscreen with "SPF 30 with antioxidants to fight free radicals and prevent fine lines and wrinkles."

Splurge: The sleek packaging and high quality ingredients of the La Prairie Anti-Aging Emulsion SPF 30 packs an anti-aging punch for $195 for 1.7 ounces. It provides powerful SPF 30 protection, as well as antioxidants vitamins C and E to protect and repair skin damage.

Steal: If you are saving for a rainy day, Olay's new Pro-X line delivers a great product with superior anti-aging properties. The Olay Professional Pro-X Age Repair Lotion ($31.63 for 2.5 ounces) with SPF 30 has it all -- broad-spectrum UVB and UVA protection, ultra-hydrating and full of antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E and Carnosine.

Exfoliating cleanser

"To get rid of dull skin, scrubs are a plus," says Dr Banks. "They're great for exfoliation, which keeps the skin looking fresh. Once a week is adequate."

Splurge: The DDF-Doctor's Dermatologic Formula Advanced Micro-Exfoliation Cleanser features an inventive Turmeric Complex with exfoliating rice that helps improve cell turnover to reveal smooth and radiant skin. Priced at $46 for 6 oz at Sephora.

Steal: Dr Banks ranks Neutrogena's gentle exfoliating wash as his top pick. This deep-cleansing product, available for around $5 at drugstores and supermarkets, features microbeads to gently exfoliate, as well as Beta Hydroxy to deep-clean pores.

Glycolic acid

Glycolic acid

"Glycolic acid can improve the skin's appearance and texture by reducing wrinkles, hyper pigmentation caused by acne scarring and sun damage," says Dr Banks. If you have sun spots or scars from acne damage, a glycolic acid can help give your skin a smooth and clear look.

Splurge: Kate Somerville's Micro Glycolic Polisher ($90) is a professional strength treatment peel that is touted as being safe for all skin types. It resurfaces the skin without being harsh.

Steal: Olay Regnerist Thermal Mini-Peel promises great results after 10 days. It combines the power of glycolic acid with a gentle micro-crystal formula to reveal more polished skin. It is available for around $15 at drugstores, supermarkets and at Amazon.

Retinol products

Retinol products

"Retinol or anything from the vitamin A family, which works very well to improve exfoliation and cellular turnover," says Dr Banks, who recommends using the retinol product at night and a broad spectrum sunscreen (above) during the day. Retinol products can cause sun sensitivity, so it is important you follow this advice.

Talk to your dermatologist about prescription-strength retinol products, such as Renova. For over-the-counter options, consider the following products.

Splurge: The Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Night Cream features a blend of eight anti-aging ingredients, retinol, glycolic acid and vitamins. For $110, it promises to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and to plump up skin.

Steal: For a great retinol boost without sacrificing big bucks, check out the Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream. This hypoallergenic product features a combination of pure Retinol and a mineral complex to reduce expression lines. Pick it up at drugstores and supermarkets for around $12.
