Dates to remember

Your makeup might not have an expiration date on its label like the food in your kitchen, but that doesn't mean it can't go bad. Makeup past its prime can cause breakouts and infections, and just doesn't help you look your best. Here's a guide to typical expiration dates of foundation, mascara and other cosmetics.

Has your makeup expired?

If you've noticed that your makeup is lying differently, your face has started to break out or you've developed a rash with no change in your normal routine, the problem could be that your makeup is long past its "best used by" date. All makeup has an expiration date, even thought it's not stated on labels. Here's how long to keep and use makeup before discarding.

Two years:

  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Powder
  • Eyeshadow
  • Blush
  • Moisturizer

One year:

  • Lipstick
  • Pencils

6 Months:

  • Mascara
  • Eye cream

Mark your makeup

Using these products after their expiration allows bacteria to irritate your skin. After purchasing your makeup, mark your own expiration date with permanent marker on the package, using the above as a guide. Fresh cosmetics mean a fresh look!
