Leighton Meester's Gossip Girl-character Blair Waldorf's style is preppy with a trendy edge, always mixing patterns and contrasting colors. She manages to wear different textures and patterns while still creating one unified look. This is how she does it:

Pick a plaid coat: The plaid coat is the bulk of the outfit and will be your biggest investment piece. Fit one that has neutral or a pop of colors (but most of all keeps you warm).

Add tights: Leighton wears lace tights that are a monochromatic color complementary to the coat. Choose a neutral with any pattern you like!
