Ready for a cut? Considering a new color? Pondering bangs? Before you make a change, consult our cheat sheet of what's in and what's out when it comes to summer hair. We asked New York City stylist and salon owner Paul Labrecque to weigh in on five hair elements: part position, color, length, bangs and layers.

Out: Perfect, squarely cut tresses.
In: Long, blended strands.
Ask your stylist for "layers that infuse body and movement," Labrecque says. For women with long hair, layers should start at the corner of the mouth, he says. With shorter styles, layers can begin at the nose.
Try: Ali Larter's cascading locks.
These layers are incredibly versatile, so experiment with beachy waves one day and go with a straight, glossy style the next.
