What exactly is dry shampoo, anyway?

Looking for the lowdown on dry shampoos? So were we! So we went to an expert to get the 4-1-1 on this trend. Amanda Jenkins is the Director of Education at the famed ARROJO Studio in New York City and has styled hair for numerous high profile bands including Kings of Leon and Good Charlotte. Amanda took some time out of her busy schedule to shed some light on dry shampoos for us.

SheKnows: How does dry shampoo work?

Amanda Jenkins: Dry shampoos work by absorbing the excess oils within the hair and scalp. The particles from the dry shampoo do stay in your hair and extend the life of hairstyles between washings.

SK: It is hygienic to use dry shampoo?

AJ: Yes. Waterless options ones usually clean and remove product residue.

When to use dry shampoo

Overall, it seems that dry shampoos bring a lot to the table. While we don't recommend forgoing a shower altogether (um, ick!), using a dry shampoo is perfect for when you don't have time to wash and dry your hair. Especially if your tresses are longer, you know that washing your locks can be a serious time commitment. Dry shampoos are perfect for when your hair needs a pick-me-up and you're in a time crunch. Keep in mind, however, that it does not replace traditional shampooing so if you've worked out or have already skipped a day or two, it's time to get your hair wet.
