Ah, summer! Frozen drinks, afternoons by the pool and a host of skin problems. As the weather warms and the humidity skyrockets, our skin reacts. Here are some remedies for our least-favorite summer skin situations.

summer skin remedySkin Disaster: Sun Spots

Skin Remedy: If those summer spots pop up try this skin cocktail. Create a face masque out of olive oil, milk and lime juice, apply to face and leave on for 15 minutes. You should see instant improvement. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, which helps fight cellular damage and improve the skin's elasticity. Lime juice has a high level of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) that are known to brighten the skin.

As a preventative measure, always wear sunscreen when you are planning on being outside. Re apply every couple of hours to prevent additional damage/discoloration to your skin.

Skin Remedy: Once you are bitten, Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Melissa Piliang, MD, advises not to scratch bites. Take an antihistamine to reduce itching and swelling, or use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment. If you are having symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, hives or difficulty swallowing, seek emergency treatment ASAP.

Always wear insect repellant to avoid bites, even though it's smell isn't exactly ideal. The best rememdy of all is preventative maintenance, even when it comes tp beauty and skincare.

Skin Remedy: If you've been exposed, wash all affected areas with soap and water. Also be sure to wash your clothes in hot water. If the poison ivy rash covers a small area, use calamine lotion or hydrocortisone ointment, says Piliang. She also cautions that, if the rash is more widespread or you have severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, see a doctor.

Skin Remedy: It's always a good idea during those hot months to keep yourself well hydrated. If you get a sunburn, this becomes extra important. Take ibuprofen for inflammation, use a cool compress on affected areas, and constantly apply moisturizer, says Piliang.

Skin Remedy: Hydration is key to improving dry skin, so drink plenty of water. Also, make sure you are moisturizing daily.

Skin Remedy:  Lip gloss is sexy in the summertime, but if your lips are painfully chapped, it will only amplify that painful look. Vaseline and water are your new BFFs.

Before you go to bed, drink a glass of water and then slop a generous amount of Vaseline onto your chapped lips. After a couple of days of hydration, inside and out, you will have luscious lips that are ready for a summer romance.

Skin Remedy: Mix 3 tablespoons almond oil, 1 teaspoon coffee grounds, 1 teaspoon cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon shea butter. Apply to clean skin in the shower while rubbing in a circular motion. Rinse thoroughly, and you will have smooth, supple skin. Circulation improves that dreaded "orange peel" look, so rubbing the area with a scrub is beneficial. Topically applied caffeine is another great way to tighten your skin and diminish the appearance of cellulite.

Skin Remedy:  This is likely due to lack of muscle tone. Leg lifts tone your inner and outer thighs, while squats help lift your buttocks. It is even fun to do at the beach with your girlfriends. Or, grab your iPod and go for a run on the sand. Enjoy the summer sun and get toned at the same time!

Skin Remedy: According to Hadley King, MD, a New York-based board-certified dermatologist and clinical instructor of dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, skin produces more oil, or sebum, in the summer when heat and humidity are on the rise. "This sebum can clog pores and cause acne. It therefore becomes more important to cleanse the skin regularly with a light, oil-free cleanser." King suggests using Nelsons Pure & Clear Purifying Cleansing Wash (or cleansing wipes if you're on the go). "These are very convenient to keep in a gym bag or hiking backpack, for example."

Skin Remedy: King says, "Exfoliate! It is important year-round to remove the dull, dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin and make your skin look dull and dry, but after wearing sunblock -- particularly products that are water resistant or have a high SPF -- exfoliation can be even more important to remove the sunblock residue." King advises to look for exfoliators with a gentle formulation and rounded, smooth grains so that skin doesn't become irritated.
